Larry Kart Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Well golly, Larry, the reviews are very favorable. Hey, while in a very expansive mood I bought the record and its predecessor, figuring that standards might bring out what remains of the non-whiz bang side of Woods, and on several tracks that's the case. But not this one. Quote
fasstrack Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) For an example of latter-day Woods at his cheesiest/most un-compositional, check out "Watch What Happens" from this album (which believe it or not I own a copy of): http://www.amazon.com/American-Songbook-Phil-Woods-Quintet/dp/B000QEILFQ A blatant piece of bebop pole dancing, IMO. Then only play it on May Day..... Edited June 14, 2012 by fasstrack Quote
JSngry Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Was May Day related to Ike Day? If so, how? If not, how not? Quote
fasstrack Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 None of these are bebop alto players in the 1970s and beyond. Whole 'nother world, that one is. 'Young man, you seem to have wandered into the wrong theater. The casting call for the role of Lou Cypher is down the hall'. 'And break your leg'.... Quote
flat5 Posted June 15, 2012 Report Posted June 15, 2012 (edited) Woods have been Philly cool if Lady Day had used May Day as a recording alias. Edited June 16, 2012 by flat5 Quote
flat5 Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Quincy Jones - Quintessence featuring Phil Woods Worth hearing again. I left my thoughts as a comment there. Quote
BillF Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Now we're on to Phil in larger outfits led by others in the 50s and 60s, don't forget that he did sterling work on this classic: Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted June 16, 2012 Report Posted June 16, 2012 Any opinions on PW's "Birds OF A Feather" (Antilles ANN 1006) rec. in 1981/82? Bought this very cheaply just for curiosity's sake at a record shop clearout sale a while ago. I own his 50s "Early Quintets" and "Four Altos" LPs as well as his pairings with Quill on Prestige, Epic and RCA but am otherwise largely unfamiliar with his work form later decades. Quote
B. Goren. Posted November 2, 2012 Report Posted November 2, 2012 Happy B-Day to Phil Woods!!! Mr. Woods is 81 today. Quote
