colinmce Posted June 11, 2012 Report Posted June 11, 2012 Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but this record is tremendous. It's Neneh Cherry (one-time pop star and Don's stepdaughter) backed by The Thing: Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen-Love and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten. This is the kind of collaboration that just doesn't happen enough; it's all very natural and thrilling. Nothing about it is "this + jazz", it's a total group effort. The music includes titles by Don Cherry, The Stooges, MF Doom, Suicide and Ornette. Quote

colinmce Posted June 11, 2012 Author Report Posted June 11, 2012 No advance copy; you can listen in full on NPR.com. Can't grab a link right now but it should be easy to find off Google. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 11, 2012 Report Posted June 11, 2012 Waiting to hear the full monty until it comes out, but I'm looking forward to it. Quote
king ubu Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 I've heard a pair of tracks - very interesting, to say the least. Not sure how well I can deal with Neneh's voice, though. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted June 12, 2012 Report Posted June 12, 2012 I caved and listened on NPR last night. It's really good. Quote
RDK Posted June 14, 2012 Report Posted June 14, 2012 Was just about to post this; glad to find a thread already here. I'm really digging this one... http://www.npr.org/2012/06/10/154159413/first-listen-neneh-cherry-and-the-thing-the-cherry-thing Quote
BFrank Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 Impressive review in the NY Times today. Gonna have to get this one! Patti Smith and Ravi Coltrane albums (reviewed here) sound like keepers, too. Quote
king ubu Posted June 20, 2012 Report Posted June 20, 2012 The Patti Smith is good! But I need to give it some more time to come to a valid judgement, only gave it two spins so far (got the book edition with photos from the JLG filming on ... "Costa Concordia", of all ocean crappers - it also has one more tune, I think) Quote
colinmce Posted July 1, 2012 Author Report Posted July 1, 2012 They remove the audio once the records are released. Quote
BFrank Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Finally getting around to listening to this. I can't think of ANYone who is doing (or could do) music remotely like this. A unique mixture of hip vocal performances over a backdrop of 60s/70s-era progressive/outside jazz. Gotta be one of the most outrageous albums of the year and could be appreciated by pretty much anyone on this board. One thing's for sure - it's NOT commercial. Quote

How about Kahil El Zabar and the ethnics? i have only heard the Cherry Thing once when it was available on NPR but for me it's at least remotely similar. Edited July 4, 2012 by uli Quote
BFrank Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Good one, Uli. You might be onto something there. Any other singers doing this from a vocal perspective? Quote

Just seen there's an album with Nona Hendryx, might be interesting? Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 My wife pointed out to me in the car yesterday that People magazine featured it among four other albums. Wild. Quote
