The last couple of times that Amazon has offered a free $2.00 mp3 credit, a couple of guys have mentioned what they got, such as a Mal Waldron and John Handy's Live at Monterey.

I thought it might be good to start a thread solely to list those mp3 albums which either a) you can recommend or b) piques your curiosity, which can be entirely or nearly entirely be purchased using the next free $2.00 credit.

I found one the other day:

Duke Ellington - Ellington at Newport - $1.78

Can anyone suggest any others?

Well, it's a single, not an album, but I can't recommend one download enough - "It's Not My Fault" by the Gulf Aid AllStars for 99 cents. I included it on a blindfold test, and it's the only track that absolutely everyone responded positively to - the moldy figs, the beboppers, the funk lovers, and the free jazz guys. The AllStars are rapper Mos Def, Trombone Shorty, Lennie Kravitz, and several members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Anyone I've ever played this for digs it.

Amazon UK has a very good general deal at present:

Two MP3 albums for £10

Buy this MP3 album with any other MP3 album under £8 and pay no more than £10 for both (terms and conditions apply). Just look for any album with this message, put it in your basket with another eligible title and the discount will be applied at checkout.

Here's a Boulez recommendation http://www.amazon.com/D%C3%A9rive-1988-rev-2002-2006/dp/B006HAP9BW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339322067&sr=8-2&keywords=boulez+derive - just the one looong piece for a dollar, dip your toe in the water...

And John Handy Live at Monterey for under $2 if you buy the tracks, not the LP http://www.amazon.com/Live-At-Monterey/dp/B001HE0JO0/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339322316&sr=301-1 Duh, you had that one.

Well, speaking of Clifford Brown jam sessions, you can get his final recordings, from the night he died, for $3. The last 3 tracks of The Beginning and the End are that Philly jam session. You can skip the first 2 short R&B tracks that he makes a brief appearance on before his first jazz recordings.

Mingus in Europe, $2.67

An Evening With Joe Henderson, Al Foster, Charlie Haden, $3.56

That's one of my favorite Clifford recordings, but according to what I've heard about a correction in the recording date it turns out it is not from the night he died but actually a year or so earlier.

The idea that this was his last recording makes a great story, though- especially when he says a prophetic "I've got to go now" after the last tune.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that.

Those Philly tenor players are pretty good.

Ziggy Vines & Billy Root!

Here's a link to an interview with biographer Nick Catalano who claims that the date is actually May 1955 (Clifford died on June 26,1956).

There's a slew of $1.78 albums right now. They seem to treat each side of an Lp as one cut: Buck Clayton Jam Session, Brubeck at Oberlin,

Ellington at the Hollywood Bowl, Ellington in Seattle, Gil Evans New Bottles Old Wine etc... From the reviews some of these seem to be needle drops. Not sure what's going on. Some are also available at full price with correct number of cuts.

Hmmm, may have to check out "Ode to Katy Perry" by Celebrity Sex Scandal...

I see they've got New Bottle Old Wine by Gil Evans. I was just listening to that this morning (on the Blue Note reissue 2fer), excellent album.

I like a number of Laswell's projects, and I love the Miles source material, but the album doesn't really work for me.

Hmmm, may have to check out "Ode to Katy Perry" by Celebrity Sex Scandal...

I'm more interested in "Ode to Katie Holmes" by Religious Cult Scandal...

Scientology mix!

Regarding Panthalassia, from what I remember, Laswell trashed Teo Macero in interviews at the time it came out but didn't really do much new with the material, which in the end is a tribute to the choices Miles and Teo made.

I'm not the biggest Willie fan, but it seemed like a good way to get a lot of stuff at once.

The review mentioned that the live cuts are some of his best, so it's worth it for that alone.

Not like it's gonna break the bank, anyway. Cheaper than a capuccino at Peet's.
