Larry Kart Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 I'd bet the drummer is Stan Levey; somehow he sounds left-handed. Quote
JSngry Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 The drum tuning sounds like Shelley Manne to me. The chart like Nelson Riddle. No complaints! Any idea from what show this was taken from? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 The chart is virtually identical to Axel Stordah's instrumental version on his great Dot exotica album "Jasmine and Jade," circa 1960. I wonder if he wrote the chart for this TV show and then recycled it for the album, or vice versa. I tried to find it on Youtube. There are two other tracks from the album but not Baubles. Quote
JSngry Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 Stordahl! The recent comment of Sinatra's Point Of No Return, that gets us Strodahl as well, and in a very good place...I never cared for his 1940s work with Sinatra, too ripe, but he seemed to have heard the message of Riddle, pared it down, got rid of all but the crucial notes, gave the sparkle room to sparkle instead of covering it up, and went to a nice place, such as on this Peggy Lee cut. And did you know that he wrote the McHale's Navy theme? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 These days I find myself getting endlessly lost on Youtube watching TV appearances by the great pop and jazz singers of this period. I love everything about these clips - the songs, the sets, the fashions. As a kid, all of this represented the mysterious and elegant world of adulthood. Quote

I finally found the Axel Stordahl version on YouTube. The whole album is here. Scroll in to about 2:40 to hear "Baubles." It is virtually the same arrangement as the Peggy Lee version above, with alternating flute/vibes and trombone in the role of Miss Lee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDEkU7IkAP4 Incidentally, right after "Baubles," you will hear the definitive version of "Moon of Manakoora."
