chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 can anyone recommend this one, or is really watered down. thats what limelight does, it waters down talent. i LOVE pop jazz lps, dont get me wrong, but limelight like, just did it wrong. did they use various producers, or the same one always? i have never been happy, and always disapointed by limelight sessions Quote
kh1958 Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Rip, Rig and Panic, and I Talk With Sprits are on Limelight, and those are two of his best albums. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 'Slightly Latin' is great (and a bit insane) too ! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 1, 2012 Author Report Posted June 1, 2012 i talk w/ sprits was the one. theyre two of his best? omg Quote
jazzbo Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 I Talk with the Spirits is definitely one of my favorite Kirks. Try it Aric. Quote
Bright Moments Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Rip, Rig and Panic - simply the best. Quote
kh1958 Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Rip Rig and Panic = Jaki Byard Experience minus Alan Dawson plus Elvin Jones. Quote
WD45 Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Another watered-down Limelight LP is Eric Dolphy's "Last Date." Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Some real milquetoast Mingus on there, too. And that cheeseball Fifty Foot Hose record. Well, actually, that LP is kind of goofy, but I like it. Quote

JSngry Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 For the record, the Mingus album was originally on Mercury. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Limelight also put out a number of the Philips 21e Siecle LPs in the US. Quote
Joe Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Limelight also gave us the Mecki Mark Men and this rather fine release... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Parker_10th_Memorial_Concert Quote
JSngry Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Let's not forget this surprise easy-listening hit! Quote
felser Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 Another watered-down Limelight LP is Eric Dolphy's "Last Date." My very favorite Dolphy album of all. I would not be willing to pay the going rate ($150-$200) for the Kirk box (I sold mine for about that much 10-12 years ago, and it still goes for that on Amazon Marketplace), but it's worth picking up the individual sessions, almost all of which are available at better prices. DMP Posted June 1, 2012 Report Posted June 1, 2012 When I caught Kirk (with Horace Parlan) in a club in Cleveland in the mid-60's, he was plugging his upcoming flute album on Mercury. ("Cannonball & Coltrane" - like the Mingus title - was also a reissue of a Mercury album.) Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 2, 2012 Report Posted June 2, 2012 For the record, the Mingus album was originally on Mercury. Wow Wow Wow That's JA• 's job Quote
jostber Posted June 2, 2012 Report Posted June 2, 2012 'Slightly Latin' is great (and a bit insane) too ! Would really like to get a hold of this one. Quote

jostber Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 'Slightly Latin' is great (and a bit insane) too ! Would really like to get a hold of this one. Not a lot of reasons for getting hold of this one though. Unfortunately. They opened the floodgates. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 3, 2012 Report Posted June 3, 2012 LOL! My favorite post-Baker Mulligan album is the Limelight Something Borrowed, Something Blue with Zoot Sims. Let's not forget this surprise easy-listening hit! Oh yeah, that is a good one. This album was my introduction to Paul Bley, and also the song Mr. Joy. I'd love to hear it again. Quote
