Bright Moments Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 (edited) How about a little corner for drummer Alvin Queen? I am enjoying some fine work by him with John Hicks et al on "Jammin' Uptown" from 1985! Alvin plays with amazing energy!!! Any fans out there? Edited May 21, 2012 by Bright Moments Quote
John L Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Thank you for setting up a corner for Mr. Queen! Count me as a fan. I jump in my seat when I hear him live. Quote
Pete C Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 First time I ever heard of him was on a Charles Tolliver album. He's been in Europe so long he's sort of off the U.S. radar. I think he succeeded Tootie Heath as the straight-ahead drummer of choice for guys like Kenny Drew and others. Quote
JSngry Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 And let us not forget the worthy output of his Nilva label, including John Patton's great Soul Connection album. Quote

king ubu Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 I think I've first heard him with Bennie Wallace on the air ... missed his one terrific Zurich concert, around 1999/2000, I think. Wallace, Danton Boller, Queen - mighty fine band. Queen's indeed on some European productions, with Dusko for instance, but also with Swiss piano great Marc Hemmeler. I think Queen's been based in Switzerland for many years (as was Jimmy Woode), but I still haven't yet managed to catch him live. (Just wondered if it was him on drums when I heard Benny Bailey/Joe Haider's quintet, but it was John Engels - the others were Andy Scherrer on tenor and Isla Eckinger on bass - fine band, good concert, great experience to have caught Benny live!) The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 Definitely - or definitively, if you like. Also this Part 1 of a 2CD set on THE 3361BLACK label. A great set. MG Quote
jazzkrow Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 I have been looking all over for the Queen/Lonnie Smith set-Lennox and 7th-on Black and Blue. Any leads? Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 Another good one, I don't play as much as some of you modern types would is Those of you who know Saxton from his work on Jimmy Ponder's "Mean streets, no bridges" will want this. Saxton (curved sop & ts), Hicks (p), Ray Drummond (b), Queen (d), prod A Queen MG Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 (edited) Alvin Queen sounds marvelous on this CD that I listened to today. Johnny Griffn / Steve Grossman Quintet - Dreyfus With Michael Weiss, Pierre Michelot and Alvin Queen Edited May 29, 2012 by Peter Friedman Quote
Tom Storer Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 I've seen Alvin Queen live several times in Paris. He makes a band hop, all right. Great drummer. He used to play with Tommy Flanagan's trio when the regular drummer couldn't make the date, and played Flanagan's detailed arrangements like he had devised them himself. Not sure where he's based--Berlin? Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Not sure where he's based--Berlin? I think he's in Geneva, Switzerland. Quote
Bright Moments Posted May 30, 2012 Author Report Posted May 30, 2012 I hope Michael Weiss chimes in with some stories about playing with Alvin!! Quote
king ubu Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Not sure where he's based--Berlin? I think he's in Geneva, Switzerland. That's what I thought, but there seems to be no info on the webs... and he's not in the Swiss online phone books. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted June 4, 2012 Report Posted June 4, 2012 I hope Michael Weiss chimes in with some stories about playing with Alvin!! My only experience thus far playing with Alvin was on the Griffin/Grossman recording, which I recall describing in another post. Suffice to say Alvin's quite a character and was a lot of fun to play with. He and Johnny were pretty close. Yes - Geneva. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 24, 2013 Report Posted January 24, 2013 Any thoughts on this date? I see Terrell Stafford, Peter Bernstein, Mike LeDonne and Jessie Davis play on this session. Quote

Dan Gould Posted October 19, 2017 Report Posted October 19, 2017 Seems like a good place to ask for other Nilva recommendations (I have the Charles Davis which is very fine and a Junior Mance/Martin Rivera duo recording and the Big John Patton Jim mentioned). Quote

Peter Friedman Posted October 19, 2017 Report Posted October 19, 2017 I like Alvin Queen on a number of Kenny Drew Trio sessions on the Japanese Alfa label Quote
