It's a great story for sure (and there's no doubt that Miles would say something like that), but I wonder how much of it is "urban legend"....I've heard it told many different ways over the years.

A lesson in how NOT to rewrite a story!

Miles Davis recounts the White House dinner in chapter 20 of his (Quincy Troupe) Autobiography.

Miles accompanied Cicely Tyson who was invited at the dinner honoring Ray Charles.

His remark was adressed to the wife of an unnamed politician who was sitting at his table. Miles says he told her 'Now tell me what you have done of any importance other than be white, and that ain't important to me, so tell me what your claim to fame is?'.

Miles also has nice things to recount about Ronald and to Nancy in the same chapter.

Thanks for clarifying, Brownie. For a moment I thought I was losing it - outrageous as Miles' autobiography is in parts, I don't remember reading that !
