Both have been on cd before. I don't have Forms and Sounds. Is it worth buying this for?

There's a woodwind quintet (with a 'trumpet interlude' by Ornette, and a couple of string quartet pieces. It is 'of interest' but I should think you would already know if you really need it or not.

I have the LP, and it's the Ornette I listen to least. The two compositions are not well-conceived pieces of music, in my opinion.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I can skip it. I love Ornette, and I'm still holding my breath for those elusive Impulses.

Will listen to "Chappaqua Suite" and "Who's Crazy?" soon.

I really prefer "Skies of America" over "Forms & Sounds" by a wide margin -- and I (otherwise) LOVE a fair bit of 20-century string quartets and wind quintets.

"Skies of America" really speaks to me. "Forms & Sounds" doesn't.

I guess I'll live happily everafter without knowing "Forms & Sounds" then ... this thread was the first time I've heard of it, anyway. Got "Skies" on vinyl not that long ago (seems legit, but probably I wouldn't know if it was a counterfeit).

I believe RCA may have released Forms & Sounds at the same time as Bill Dixon's Intents & Purposes, kind of a free jazz meets contemporary classical thing. The Dixon album is much more successful. I guess this pairing makes sense, though, now that both albums are part of the same big, happy corporate family.

The wind quintet may have been the same piece that was performed at the notorious Battery Park concert where they were doing construction throughout the show and flashed bright lights in the middle of the quartet set. Lew Soloff was one of the players in the group.

I'm mad about that album. Pharoah's contribution is brilliant too.

Why does that anger you?
