David Ayers Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) That's all I can tell you. There has been a CD of Forms and Sounds, right, in that Bluebird series? I have the LP so I never bought it. Edited May 19, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
JETman Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 Both have been on cd before. I don't have Forms and Sounds. Is it worth buying this for? Quote
David Ayers Posted May 19, 2012 Author Report Posted May 19, 2012 Both have been on cd before. I don't have Forms and Sounds. Is it worth buying this for? There's a woodwind quintet (with a 'trumpet interlude' by Ornette, and a couple of string quartet pieces. It is 'of interest' but I should think you would already know if you really need it or not. Head Man Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 Both have been on cd before. I don't have Forms and Sounds. Is it worth buying this for? Only if you like that sort of thing Quote
jeffcrom Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 Both have been on cd before. I don't have Forms and Sounds. Is it worth buying this for? I have the LP, and it's the Ornette I listen to least. The two compositions are not well-conceived pieces of music, in my opinion. Quote
JETman Posted May 19, 2012 Report Posted May 19, 2012 Thanks guys. Sounds like I can skip it. I love Ornette, and I'm still holding my breath for those elusive Impulses. Will listen to "Chappaqua Suite" and "Who's Crazy?" soon. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 20, 2012 Report Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) I really prefer "Skies of America" over "Forms & Sounds" by a wide margin -- and I (otherwise) LOVE a fair bit of 20-century string quartets and wind quintets. "Skies of America" really speaks to me. "Forms & Sounds" doesn't. Edited May 20, 2012 by Rooster_Ties Quote
king ubu Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 I guess I'll live happily everafter without knowing "Forms & Sounds" then ... this thread was the first time I've heard of it, anyway. Got "Skies" on vinyl not that long ago (seems legit, but probably I wouldn't know if it was a counterfeit). Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 Here's the wind quintet (with trumpet interludes by Ornette himself)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2vFsSttbbE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4zrx5Z2FmM Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 And here's the string quartet (or part of it)... Quote
Pete C Posted May 21, 2012 Report Posted May 21, 2012 I believe RCA may have released Forms & Sounds at the same time as Bill Dixon's Intents & Purposes, kind of a free jazz meets contemporary classical thing. The Dixon album is much more successful. I guess this pairing makes sense, though, now that both albums are part of the same big, happy corporate family. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 Ornette's was red seal, Bill's was black label (jazz & pop). Bill wanted it to be a red seal, but it didn't come out that way. As Chuck mentioned, it probably was more visible at the time as a result. The Ornette is pretty boring IMO. Quote
Pete C Posted May 24, 2012 Report Posted May 24, 2012 The wind quintet may have been the same piece that was performed at the notorious Battery Park concert where they were doing construction throughout the show and flashed bright lights in the middle of the quartet set. Lew Soloff was one of the players in the group. Will listen to "Chappaqua Suite" I'm mad about that album. Pharoah's contribution is brilliant too. Quote

JETman Posted May 25, 2012 Report Posted May 25, 2012 Only on this board. I read the post quickly and misunderstood. No shenanigans intended. Quote
