AmirBagachelles Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Downtown says these came in and sold right out. Has anybody seen this anywhere else in NYC? Has anybody listened to it yet? Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 (edited) According to DMG's site it's in stock, but it might not be up to date. To repeat Amir's question: anyone heard it yet? Opinions? Edited January 22, 2004 by J.A.W. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 PAUL MURPHY - Red Snapper: Paul Murphy at CBS (Cadence 1167) Featuring Jimmy Lyons on alto sax, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Karen Borca on bassoon, Mary Anne Driscoll on piano & voice and Paul Murphy on drums & percussion. This is a Columbia studio recording from June of 1982 and we did make a mistake in last week's newsletter by mentioning that this was Jimmy Lyon's date, when in fact it was Paul Murphy's. Formerly based in San Francisco, drum wiz Paul Murphy moved to NY in the early 70's and was most fortunate to be able to record in the legendary Columbia Records studio for this historic date. 'Red Snapper' consists of some 19 pieces, all under six minutes but still over an hour in length, a number of solos, duos and trios as well as the quintet are featured. Although I completely unfamiliar with Mary Anne and Paul (except for another date or two with Jimmy Lyons), both the piano and drums are endlessly inventive throughout. The first two pieces consist of solo drums and are filled with restrained fire. The quintet soon erupt on "The Scenery 1" with some high flying trumpet blasting on top of the cascading piano and drums. There are numerous duos for Jimmy's alto sax and Paul's drums which are all incredible, burning together with some fierce and intense force. If you do or don't already own that colossal Jimmy Lyons 5 cd box set on Ayler Records, you still would want to own this essential session as well - it is a wonderful thing to have this long lost gem available! CD for $14-- Downtown Music Gallery I'll phone Cadence in a little bit and see if they have this one in stock. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted January 23, 2004 Author Report Posted January 23, 2004 (edited) I like Murphy's Enarre. And he is really awesome on the Black Saint Trio Hurricane session. Don't know the Eremite of same trio. Downtown had another 10 copies as of Fri. night. Edited January 24, 2004 by AmirBagachelles Quote
Guest Chaney Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 Cadence has this title in stock - $13 Phone: 315-287-2852 Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 23, 2004 Report Posted January 23, 2004 Is this the same material as the "Cloudburst" LP that Murphy cut in the early 80s, or entirely different? Thanks. Quote
king ubu Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Playing this for the first time right now ... "Red Snapper", that is - intriguing! Quote
colinmce Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Somehow never heard about this. I'd love to hear it. Quote
paul secor Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Played it again today and imo it's well worth getting hold of. For anyone who's into Jimmy Lyons, there are many tracks of good free blowing J.L. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Yeah, it is cool. I picked one up maybe three years ago. Quote
JSngry Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 I completely missed this one...is it still semi-readily available? I'm good for some Jimmy Lyons no mater what, always. Quote
king ubu Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 Some beautiful Lyons here, indeed! Available from Cadence, that's where I just ordered mine. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 Also found it at Cadence over the weekend. Shipping seemed a bit gouge-y, but oh well... Quote
Head Man Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 .....shipping seemed a bit gouge-y, but oh well... I found it impossible to calculate what I would be charged for shipping, so........no order. Quote
king ubu Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 Shipping was 12.50 - guess that's just what it takes these days. I wanted the disc, so it was fine. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 My shipping was something like $6.90...kinda bullshit, but, yeah, in this case, that's what it took, I guess. Shipping rates can be determined (after a fashion) here: https://www.klompfoot.com/6F7B7F0620BD473B9046/shipping-rates.html Not particularly user friendly, but...it works. Quote
