Hardbopjazz Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) Can you name well known musicians that were house musicians in clubs? I know George Cable was the house pianist at the Keystone Korner. Tony Oxley was the house drummer at Ronnie Scott's. Would Albert Heath been the house drummer at the Montmartre Jazzhus in Copenhagen? He is on some many recordings in the 60s from that place. Marian McPartland had a regular gig at the Hickory House in NYC. I don't know if you would consider that the house pianist. NHOP was the house bass platyer at Montmartre. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Wasn't Teddy Wilson the house pianist at the Onxy club, in NY, after he closed down his big band? House band at the Blue Note club in Paris for some time until mid '65. He was followed by Lou Bennett, with Rene Thomas and Kenny Clarke. Oh, and Fred Anderson at the Velvet Lounge. I bet there are hundreds! MG Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Stan Tracey at Ronnie's. I might be wrong but didn't John Taylor do a stint there too? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 OH, Buddy Tate had the house band at the Celebrity CLub, NY for years and years and years and years. MG Quote
BillF Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 The late Joe Palin was house pianist at Club 43 in Manchester in the 60s and in this role he got to accompany Ben Webster, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, Leo Wright and Carmell Jones, just to mention the ones that I saw! Quote
BeBop Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 I'd have characterized Jessica Williams as the Keystone's house pianist, for many years. And Eddie Marshall as house drummer. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Joseph Haydn was the house composer (and, I suspect, keyboard player) at the Eszterházy Palace for many years. A really swinging joint, by all accounts. Then there was W.A. Mozart in Salzburg...though that one ended badly. And as for J.S. Bach.... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 I believe that pianist Mike Kull was the house-trio leader for a resort/club in the Catskills for many years. Maybe he still is.He's on some of Joe McPhee's first records, btw. Quote
brownie Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Let's not forget Olivier Messiaen's 60-year gig at the Paris Trinity Church! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 14, 2012 Report Posted May 14, 2012 Let's not forget Olivier Messiaen's 60-year gig at the Paris Trinity Church! It doesn't come much better than being the backing band for God. Quote
