saalikjazz Posted January 21, 2004 Report Posted January 21, 2004 I love this chart. I was thinking about writing lyrics for it. Does anybody know what this song is about or what Duke Jordan was thinking about when he wrote it. I would definetly like to find out. I am researching it as we speak. B) Quote
brownie Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 No idea what Duke Jordan was thinking about when he composed the tune (back in 1953, I think). The original title of that composition was Minor Encamp. He recorded this for the first time - under its original title- in January 1954 in New York. The session was produced for the French label Swing. Quote
pepe Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Maybe he was thinking about Sheila. Ask her. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Maybe he was thinking about himself... Jor-Du... Jordan-Duke.... Duke Jordan. Know what I'm sayin'? Quote

couw Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 yeah, but he must have been thinking in a zen kinda upside down bizarro way. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Maybe he was responding to Sandu. Or fondu. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 I just realized this was in the "Forums Discussion" forum. I'm going to move it to the "musicians" forum since he's asking about charts and lyrics and stuff. Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 FWIW, "Jordu" bears a strong resemblance to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite." Quote
JSngry Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 So, what's up w/Clifford Brown's "Sandu"? Quote
Brad Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Or maybe he just needed a title for a song and figured it'd be a catchy phrase Quote
bigbadbob Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Thought you might like to know that I have written a lyric line to the exact melody of Jordu (saalikjazz's comment in the organissimo jazz forum, which I only just discovered). In places it's a bit tricky to sing - the sixteenth-note triplets above all - but the words do precisely fit the melody (the word 'individual' has to be regarded as four syllables: in-di-vid-yal). YOU WANNA PLAY A SONG THAT'S CALLED JORDU YOU BETTER GROOVE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT TOO THERE'S NO USE MOANIN' THAT YOU ONCE KNEW HOW GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW YOUNG CLIFFORD WAILED IT WHEN THE SONG WAS NEW IF SATCH HAD KNOWN IT HE'D HAVE BLOWN IT TOO DUKE JORDAN'S MELODY BRINGS MUSIC JOY PLAY IT ON YOUR HORN BOY THAT BRIDGE FLYIN' ALL AROUND HAS ITS OWN INDIVIDUAL SOUND WITH THE BASS DOWN UPON THE GROUND AND THEN THE NOTES SEEM TO BE THE SAME BUT THE CHORDS PLAY A LITTLE GAME TAKIN' YOU RIGHT BACK TO THE POINT WHEN YOU WANNA PLAY A SONG THAT'S CALLED JORDU YOU BETTER GROOVE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT TOO THERE'S NO USE MOANIN' THAT YOU ONCE KNEW HOW GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW GET IT RIGHT ON DOWN NOW JUST SING IT OUT YEAH JORDU If anyone wants to use this (or adapt it) please feel free, but I would appreciate being informed and credited if appropriate. I've also written lyrics for 'Yardbird Suite', 'Donna Lee' (yes, really!) and several alternative lyrics that will never be made public because of copyright and other (ahem) problems. Just in case you don't know the album, one of the best lyric lines written to a jazz solo is Med Flory's version of the Parker solo on 'Ko Ko' (Supersax and L.A. Voices album). Mind-blowing! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Knowing his surly disposition I had always thought it was like a condensation of "Throwing a Jordan," of "Fuck YOU". . . hence "Jordu". . . Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Just to add a postscript, when I interviewed Jordan back in the 1970s he informed me that the song was no longer his, lost in a sleazy publishing deal - and I do remember, on one of his later recordings, hearing the song under a different title - Quote

bigbadbob Posted January 14, 2005 Report Posted January 14, 2005 BroCli is a fun thought. How about if Curtis Fuller had used his name in similar fashion for a composition (ahem). Quote

JSngry Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 Names related to "sandu" Now, if "Dahoud" was Arabic for "David", who was this "David", and who had the name that inspired "Sandu"? Is THIS the "Dahoud in question? Probably not. Quote
