A student of Teddy's reports that he passed away last night. I have no other details.

Teddy played at the Atlas Theatre here in D.C. in October, recreating the tentet music with Brad Linde and his group. This was probably Teddy's very last gig.

Very sad news to start the day with. The recordings with Wardell Gray were some of the very first jazz I ever heard and so highly of influence - and for that (and the many other great LPs) I've got to give Mr Charles a big thanks. RIP. :(

The Atlantic 'Tentet' and 'Word From Bird' LPs will be coming out today.

Jesus. We made friends 3 years ago when Chris Byars brought him out for some gigs. They reassembled the Tentet. After we jammed at Fat Cat-and he sounded great and spry as a teenager-I drove out to his house way out on the Island. What an adventure. I'll tell the story sometime, it's a hilarious classic-as was he. The main thing that impressed me about Teddy was the way he got through life-taking or leaving the music biz on his own terms. This was evidenced by the long sailboat parked at the far right driueway of house that I spied the wintry day in 2009 I was over. What a character. What a man. What a life! Bye bye, Teddy. And ahoy.

Oh no - what sad news! Great vibist, great writer (those tentet recordings are priceless) ... and an uncompromosing soul. I second the recommendation of Noal Cohen's great disco work.

The three sessions he did with Mingus are great - I highly recommend burning them onto one disc. They are scattered over three labels.

Sad indeed. I just love those early recordings with Raney and Overton. They sound like they were recorded in a bedroom. There's really nothing else like them. Not to mention the great Tentet.

Listening to the Tentet LP for the first time in awhile and it really is just so modern. If you came in at the right time you could easily mistake it for something like Muhal Richard Abrahms. But then it also just hits that perfect 50s jazz note too. A real treasure.
