BillF Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 I was there! "That's my hands you hear clappin' on that record" (Pee Wee Marquette) Quote
umum_cypher Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 I was there! Lucky blighter. Mind you, you had to live through all that austerity first. Not like now. Hold on ... Quote
alankin Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 There was an FM broadcast. Someone might have recorded the broadcast. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 It's out there on illegal downloading sites. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Why the heck did they convert that place into another damned boutique hotel and gut most of the place out? What a waste.. Quote
brownie Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Okay.... Is this being released? A new label (Spanish?) by the name of 'Head on Fire' is releasing this as a double CD! Quote
BillF Posted April 13, 2012 Author Report Posted April 13, 2012 I only recall one number from the concert - Shorter's "The Chess Players". Will be interesting to see if it's on the album. (This was much the same time as The Big Beat also including that composition was recorded for Blue Note.) Unfortunately, I also recall that the Free Trade Hall's dreadful acoustics didn't accord well with Art's deafening drumming - so what sound quality can we hope for on the disc? Quote
umum_cypher Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 The tape isn't bad. Wayne isn't, either. Quote

David Ayers Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) So a single CD. And a limited edition of 300 - are they nuts? 300?? On a related theme, I see they are bringing out Tough! albeit in an unwelcome coupling. http://www.jazzmessengers.com/solar-records-new-releases/product101609 Edited April 13, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
David Ayers Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) And finally I see that the much vilified (on this board) Real Gone label has a stack of 8-albums-on-four-CDs-minus-the-odd-track sets coming out including Blakey, Roach, Smith (vol 2), Farmer, Drew, Quincy Jones, Lateef, Fuller, Nina Simone, Jamal, JJ Johnson - that's on top of others already out that we *may* not have discussed here (Mulligan, Coltrane, Byrd, Bennie Green, Gillepsie, Mclean, Mann, Chambers, Ellington) plus many others which I think we did discuss. So dust off your rhetoric. Edited April 13, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 Hi folks, Unfortunately, four titles and certainly many announcement are missing: Round Midnight This Here Blues March Night In Tunisia (another version from another set) Not really serious! Quote
umum_cypher Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 On a related theme, I see they are bringing out Tough! albeit in an unwelcome coupling. Tough! I hope the sound is better than the spelling. This release (also called Tought! apparently) features the little-known pianist Sam Dockeryery. I always thought he went on a bit. And as if there was a bassist called Spanky DeBrest! Quote

umum_cypher Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 And as if there was a bassist called Spanky DeBrest! There is! He lives at the North Pole with Santa! In fact, and this is absolutely true, Spanky had a brother called Slappy. I think there was another brother called Skippy. In fact I think there were four or five brothers, all similarly monikered. The DeBrests were a much-liked (and now fondly remembered) Richard Allen Project family. Quote
BillF Posted April 13, 2012 Author Report Posted April 13, 2012 This release features the little-known pianist Sam Dockeryery. Spanky was certainly for real, but there was no Sam Dockeryery in the history of the music! Quote

umum_cypher Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 I phoned up Sam Dockery to ask if I could interview him. He was very nice about it, but he said he was too busy. In the background, the sound of Oprah was unmistakable. Quote

Pete C Posted April 13, 2012 Report Posted April 13, 2012 I'd guess by the number of recordings that have surfaced from Free Trade Hall (compared to London venues, for instance) that they must have broadcast jazz concerts on a regular basis. doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doo-bie badoobie doo-bie Shouldn't that be doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie doobie dada badoobie dada?
