alocispepraluger102 Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 (edited) does jaki byard have an equal, or even a near equal? Edited April 9, 2012 by alocispepraluger102 Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Report Posted April 9, 2012 Roland Hanna? thanks. close, or perhaps mary lou williams? Quote
paul secor Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Not what you're looking for, but Ray Charles played piano and alto. Quote
Free For All Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 Roland Hanna? thanks. close, or perhaps mary lou williams? Of course, Roland Hanna didn't play saxophone, but his stylistic versatility was in the same ballpark IMO. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 you may scoff at this, but I have heard Harry Connick move between styles in a way which sounded much like Jaki. He tends to lack taste, but he's got keyboard chops galore. And he can do a lot, when he's not just showing off. Quote

AllenLowe Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 I will also plug my friend Bob Neloms, though he's been inactive many years. Mighty left hand, plays inside or out, can fit in anywhere. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 He does a scary James Booker. Another Booker student, David Torkanowsky, seemed to be able to do anything, any moment, all at once when I saw him play last year. A real surprise! Whether or no he's in the same tier as Jaki Byard is y'all's business! Quote

.:.impossible Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 That video is a definitive no. Way too much Stanton Moore though. I saw him with Zigaboo, Porter, and Payton. Quote
John Tapscott Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Roland Hanna? thanks. close, or perhaps mary lou williams? Of course, Roland Hanna didn't play saxophone, but his stylistic versatility was in the same ballpark IMO. Likewise Dick Hyman. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Rossano Sportiello is a pianist who can play in a great variety of styles. Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Johnny Guarnieri was quite a chamelon and very gifted in his own right. Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 loved Guarnieri, saw him in person only once and he was astounding. Funny guy, too. Quote

AllenLowe Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 this is all wonderful stuff, but I miss Jaki. He'd have been 90 this year. Quote
Joe Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 Mickey Tucker can be something of a pan-stylist. As can Dave Burrell. Quote
