mr jazz Posted April 2, 2012 Report Posted April 2, 2012 aren't there some things on the Fats Proper box that aren't readily available elsewhere? Quote

mracz Posted April 17, 2012 Report Posted April 17, 2012 Sorry, I mentioned in the first post that I do have that. I have more Fats than I realized. Still, thanks for the suggestions. I'm gonna look out for that concert with Bird. Get the Rare Live Recordings issue (RLR), which is speed-corrected. The Columbia LPs and the other issues I've heard are all mastered at the wrong pitch (too high); after decades of listening to the uncorrected versions, hearing the RLR version was a revelation. The music is just as exciting, but it sounds so much better... Quote

Pete C Posted April 18, 2012 Report Posted April 18, 2012 mark Does that include the UK 4CD Parker Birdland Box (1995)? Are you talking about the Ember set, in the long bookfold box? That's the one I have. Quote

But as everyone else has said, essential in whatever guise you can get it. BTW, the Fats biography from a few years ago has an excellent discography and detailed critical consideration of the recordings. It's a good read in any case. Quote
