colinmce Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 I have the Complete Blue Note, the Savoys, and the Milestone CD with Tadd Dameron. Anything else that doesn't verge into abject completism? (ie indecipherable airchecks, cuts where he plays an 8-bar solo, etc)Also have his Prestige session. Quote
BillF Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 A good deal of the late Fats here, with a Fats/Hawkins quintet featured. Quote

Agree, that's why I said "late". But there's a wistfulness, which is also heard on the Lanphere session, that's very appealing. Quote
BillF Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) Don't be put off by Benny Goodman's leadership, try to get to hear his 1948 septet track, "Stealin' Apples" with Fats and Wardell. Ah! Here it is: Edited March 31, 2012 by BillF Quote

Pete C Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) The live date with Bird, Bud, & Blakey, I think that's pretty indispensable. Jim, do you have an Amazon link for this one? The material has been released in various forms over the years. I found these on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Live-Birdland-Bonus-Tracks/dp/B002689AUA/ http://www.amazon.com/Birdland-1-Charlie-Parker/dp/B00004SD2O/ I think the 4-disc set on Charly is the same set I have on Ember (Complete Birdland Recordings): http://www.amazon.com/Bird-at-Birdland-Charlie-Parker/dp/B000025BS3/ One amusing thing about the date is that for years the singer on Embraceable You was listed as Chubby Newsome, a female vocalist, but it's actually Little Jimmy Scott (confirmed by Scott himself). I don't think it's a radio broadcast, as stated above, but a location recording. Edited March 31, 2012 by Pete C Quote

These are/were Boris Rose recordings, only once issued "legitimately" on, on the Columbia double LP One Night In Birdland. But they've been booted many, many times on many, many labels and in all the traditional formats. Right now, the only reasonably priced item I see on amazon is this one: http://www.amazon.co...33221107&sr=1-1 The live date with Bird, Bud, & Blakey, I think that's pretty indispensable. It's a Proper set, which means you tend to get almost all of a lot of things and everything of nothing. Mileages vary, but for my tastes, I'd just as soon have complete sessions rather than compilations/anthologies/overviews/samplers/whatever, especially when it comes to Bird, and extra especially when it comes to live/bootleg Bird. Again, that's just for my tastes and interests. Quote

romualdo Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 What about Kenny Clarke & His 52nd St Boys - Sept 46 NYC Swing session (Epistrophy, 52nd St Theme, Oop Bop Sh'Bam, Rue Chaptal) - can source these titles from the KC CD, Swing Master Takes 46-50 (Jazz Factory) Billy Eckstine Band - National recordings (BE Savoy set - maybe you have this?) Metronome All Stars 1/49 (Overtime, Victory Ball - various versions) - on the Dizzy Gillespie RCA 3CD set Barry Ulanov All Stars 11/47 - on Parker/Tristano Definitive CD - Complete Recordings (CD sound is markedly improved on the vinyl versions I have); also on the "Bird In Time" ESP box Quote
king ubu Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 "Stealin' Apples" is on the Dameron/Navarro 2CD set. What I'd love to see is a complete edition of all the Tadd airchecks, no matter if Fats on them or not! Would make a wonderful Mosaic Select, I bet... Quote
