brownie Posted March 31, 2012 Report Posted March 31, 2012 A recording of a January 1971 performance by louis Armstrong at the National Press Club in Washington is coming out on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. It was one of Satchmo's last appearance before his death six months later. Story in the Washington Post yesterday. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 1, 2012 Report Posted April 1, 2012 From the article... The 58-minute recording will be released April 24 and discussed April 27 at a forum at the Press Club. Not sure, but I think there's a good chance that April 27th discussion may turn up here: http://press.org/news-multimedia/video. Quote

Swinging Swede Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 That blog also talks about another new Armstrong release, recorded at Basin Street in May 1955, right after Satch Plays Fats had been completed. It is coming out on the Mr. Music label in just a few days. Quote
king ubu Posted April 28, 2012 Report Posted April 28, 2012 Just having my very first listen to the Chicago 2CD set - very good! Guess that Basin Street will be mighty fine, too (besides Bigard, that is - it's mentioned on the blog that he's doing his usual aimless noodling - usual, that is, for Satchmo All Stars era playing... with Duke he was, uhm, usually, fine). jazzbo Posted April 28, 2012 Report Posted April 28, 2012 Flurin, what Chicago 2cd set are you referencing? Quote
king ubu Posted April 29, 2012 Report Posted April 29, 2012 The 1956 one on Columbia/Legacy... finally got around to it. Also gave the 1958 Monterey set another spin, and that one's very good as well! Quote
jazzbo Posted April 29, 2012 Report Posted April 29, 2012 Ah okay. I listened to part of the new Basin St. recordings today. Good stuff, if a bit too "scrubbed" and "loud." Quote
king ubu Posted April 29, 2012 Report Posted April 29, 2012 Sorry if I made you think there was even more newly discoverer/released Louis aroud! Quote
JETman Posted April 29, 2012 Report Posted April 29, 2012 While fine enough, all of these All-Star recordings from this period are beginning to sound alike to me. It may be time for me to give up the ghost. Quote
