Larry Kart Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Litweiler's review of Shaw appeared in the Oct. 17, 1968 issue of DB. The club was the Hungry Eye. The rest of the band was organist Bobby Pierce and drummer Fred Stoll. I should copy out the review, which is indeed excellent (and soulful, too), but I'm too lazy to do that right now. It's rather lengthy, we're in the midst of a warm pre-spring day, and I feel a nap coming on, Quote
JSngry Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Bobby Pierce, no shit! His Cobblestone sides are freakin' lost gems. Quote
king ubu Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 "Think!" Guess I'll have to hunt for some Shaw vinyl some day... got the dusty CD (and have heard "Carnival Sketches", too). But I'm in the Mingus camp, too... "East Coasting" is among my favorites for many reasons, several of them coming from Shaw! Quote
brownie Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 The Gene Shaw 'Debut in Blues' was briefly available when Italians reissued it back in vinyl days: Got that somewhere. Not my favorite Shaw album! Quote
Clunky Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 The Gene Shaw 'Debut in Blues' was briefly available when Italians reissued it back in vinyl days: Got that somewhere. Not my favorite Shaw album! The Italian issue has at the end of Side 2 has some speed control issues to my ears. It's listenable and hopefully this doesn't reflect problems with the master tapes. medjuck Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 FWIW I've digitized Carnival Sketches. Quote
JSngry Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 I don't recognize that Italian cover...this is the one I've always known: Quote
