prestontw Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 My ongoing Chicago jazz/soul jazz/Argo-Cadet project marches on - this afternoon I located and reached out to the two surviving daughters of the trumpet player Gene Shaw! (Mingus sideman and leader of three brilliant recordings on Argo from 1962-64). Interestingly - both now reside in Europe (France and Italy, respectively). I'm going to interview both about their father on the weekend. More later! trevor Quote
JSngry Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Dude, you are on a freakin' ROLL! You must be riding on the Sun Ship! For real, I've been digging your blog for a while now, and this recent foray into documentation of people and not "just" records is much appreciated. Quote
epistrophy007 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I second what JSngry said so correctly! Many thanks... Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 FWIW, maybe John Litweiler and I are the only members to have heard Gene/Clarence in person. Quote
paul secor Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 FWIW, maybe John Litweiler and I are the only members to have heard Gene/Clarence in person. Any rememberances? Quote
medjuck Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Am I correct that only one of his records as leader is available on cd? Quote
kh1958 Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Dusty Groove issued Breakthrough. There was a Japanese CD issue of Carnival Sketches. Debut in Blues has not been issued on CD. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) I had one of his LPs which was ok but not great; I always wondered if he was another of those musicians who needed a strong leader (like Mingus) to kick him in the butt. Edited March 15, 2012 by AllenLowe Quote
Pete C Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Nothing of his on Spotify. When I typed Clarence Shaw it asked if I meant Clarinet Shaw, and when I typed Gene Shaw it asked whether I wanted Gone Show. Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 FWIW, maybe John Litweiler and I are the only members to have heard Gene/Clarence in person. I did, too. Same time, same place. On Wells St., don't recall the name of the club/bar (the Something or Other SquIre), but I know where it was physically, that you could see the band in the front window (I think), and that Shaw played great. There was a fine Litweiler review of the band in Down Beat. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Will be interesting to read details of the interviews. Thanks! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Was that the organ group? Yes, and I can't believe I left out Larry!!! Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Who was the organist? Amina? No -- a guy, can't recall his name. I'll try to track down that Litweiler review, may have it in a bound volume of DB. Was that the organ group? Yes, and I can't believe I left out Larry!!! Semi-invisibilty is one of my secrets and often a very useful one. The call me Manduck the Magician. Quote
JSngry Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 The call me Manduck the Magician. Interested in the AFLAC gig? They need help, and badly. Quote
Pete C Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) There was/is a joint in NYC called the Angry Squire down in Greenwich Village near NYU. Angry Squire was in Chelsea, 7th Ave. & 23rd. I gigged there once with Joel Forrester & Dave Hofstra shortly before they closed. Pianist Alan Kamen did the bookings toward the end. It was a bit of a dive, but Dakota Staton and Jaki Byard often performed there. Edited March 15, 2012 by Pete C Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 The call me Manduck the Magician. Interested in the AFLAC gig? They need help, and badly. Don't have the voice for it. BTW, Manduck was the title character in a terrific old Mad (when it was still a comic book) parody of Mandrake the Magician. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 the Angry Squire - went there a lot. Saw Jaki B; Barry Harris did an amazing night right after Monk died, all Monk tunes; also, the location of Al Haig's very last gig (with Ben Brown and probably Jimmy Wormworth, IIRC) - Quote
six string Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 I found a copy of Debut in Blue a few months ago in really nice shape and it didn't cost me much either. I was thrilled. I like his playing and Carnival is my favorite by him. Quote
Pete C Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 also, the location of Al Haig's very last gig Did you ever catch Haig & Jimmy Raney at Gregory's? Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 unfortunately not - though that was where I met Haig, also, btw, Frank Wright used to hang out at the Angry Squire. Quote
