Happy Birthday, Roy Haynes!

Just found this bit from an interview published a year ago:

When was your first recording session?

My first one was in Boston. I don't know what they did with that. That would have been in 1944. Then, in 1945, I joined Luis Russel's band. He sent me a one way ticket to come down and join his band in the summer. I suppose you know who Luis Russell is?

Ummm ...

He used to play with King Oliver.

Right, right. OK. He was Catherine Russell's father.

Right. It took Catherine Russell to get to Luis Russell?

I apologize for my ignorance! I still have much to learn.

Apparently.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Haynes. I've seen Roy Haynes perform twice, and he was incredible both times. I'll be celebrating his birthday listening to Out of the Afternoon and his Trio, with John Patitucci and Danilo Perez.

He may sit in with the Allman Brothers if he's in NYC this month- thy're big fans of his and he's sat in with them a bunch of times. IIRC, Haynes is the last man standing who played with both Bird and Trane.

I saw Haynes a few years ago and was simply blown away.

He may be our best living drummer--as good, or better, than Dejohnette.

In my earlier jazz days I deeply dug Max, Tony Wiiliams, Elvin, Art Blakey, and Jack DeJohnette. I came on a little slowly with Roy. Not sure why. All that great work with Chick, Sonny, Getz, Dolphy, Metheny, and countless more. Let's not forget he's done a lot of great work under his own leadership.

I know a picture of Bird soloing as a member of a Jimmy Heath big band with Trane in the sax section looking on. So Heath maybe an other.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Haynes!

I have a framed photo of Mr. Haynes playing with Bird, Monk and Mingus at a club in NYC (where else?) that I bought from the son of the photographer at an Oakland record shop. It's one of my prized possessions. One of those "what would you take in a house fire?" kind of things.

He just keeps on keepin' on. Good for him, I say.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Haynes!

Sonny Rollins as well? (Miles Davis session with Bird on tenor plus the Coltrane/Rollins session, both for Prestige).
