king ubu Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Those DL certificates rarely work for me... What I'd be most interested to know though: is "My Favorite Quintet", the LP itself, planned to be included? Never, ever, saw that one around - it's one of the Mingus LPs I've never heard (I think the only official one besides the late Hampton date). Quote
jostber Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Great news that more Mingus will be released! Voted for the physical product at the web site(no fbook for me either) and hoping for a Mosaic release. As I love vinyl the most, a release in that format would be great as well. Best way to find that one is on the French 'America' label LP release - which is how I got my copy. An original on the Charles Mingus label though would be a pretty mythical beast, I suspect. I've once spotted one in Paris (but it wasn't for sale) Will have to look for this in case it really won't be included (which, with all due respect, would be a silly call in my opinion). Quote

Or look for Prestige P-24092 - Portrait, a 2LP that also includes Town Hall Concert and has liner notes by Jaki Byard. Quote

JSngry Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 It was among the last of the Prestige 24000 series, the series of "two-fers" that set the standard format for reissues throughout the 1970s. It was soon to be replaced by the OJC line of LPs , which was a mixed blessing... Quote
kh1958 Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 There's also a Fantasy reissue of My Favorite Quintet on a single LP. Here's one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHARLES-MINGUS-My-Favorite-Quintet-LP-JWS-5-fantasy-Records-/230759214639?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item35ba522e2f#ht_324wt_117 Quote
medjuck Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 As of right now Digital Downloads: 66 4-CD set: 18 6-CD set: 84 F Sorry to ask again but where do you see the results? (It's probably right in front of me on the FB page but I'm not seeing it>) Quote
jazzbo Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Joe, on the FB Page, move your mouse to the right of each poll choice and you should see a pop up window with data. . . The results there are different than are reported above. Quote
king ubu Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) The poll linked to above gives me: DL: 4 4CD: 6 6CD: 52 Edited March 14, 2012 by king ubu Quote
jazzbo Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Weird, as that's VERY different from what it shows me. Edited March 14, 2012 by jazzbo Quote
jazzbo Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Here's the online poll page from www.mingusmingusmingus.com Encouraging, it's very different than the results on my facebook page. On facebook, digital downloads leads. I'm glad I mentioned in my email that FB results may not be the best indicator of the wishes of all Mingus fans. http://test.easypolls.net/poll.html?p=4f5e2cece4b07459c19b4d83 Digital Downloads 6% (4) 4 CD box set for $68 9% (6) 6 CD box set (with additional music) for $102 84% (54) Not facebook, the one in post #42! Okay, I didn't check the link in post 42; I assumed it was the FB link. Edited March 14, 2012 by jazzbo Quote
JSngry Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Combining the two polls: Digital Download = 70 (66+4) 4 CD Set = 26 (20+6) 6 CD Set = 138 (84+54) Now - how many people voted in both polls? Quote
paul secor Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) And how many people might buy a Mosaic set who didn't vote on Facebook or on the Mingus site? And...? Whatever happens will happen. Edited March 14, 2012 by paul secor Quote
JSngry Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 And how many people will be surfing iTunes and say, "hey, new Mingus! CLICK!!!" I'm just wondering what parallel polls tells you if you don't have controls in place to guard against multiple voting by the same user...where's the business sense? Then again... Whatever. I'm getting the most material available in whatever format in which it is issued. It's Mingus, and prime Mingus at that. SEnd it to me on flexi-disc if needed. Quote

Tom in RI Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 Someone get Sue Mingus together with Laurie Pepper. Seriously, I would have thought Mingus would be a surer bet than Art Pepper. Am I all wet with that supposition? Quote
J.A.W. Posted July 4, 2012 Report Posted July 4, 2012 Just checked - as it is now: Digital Downloads 13% (18) 4 CD box set for $68 15% (20) 6 CD box set (with additional music) for $102 72% (96) Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Does anybody know how much or how many of the '64 Jazz Workshop live concerts were professionally recorded, by well regarded recording engineers? Seems like almost everything I have heard was at best perhaps just enough for a medium quality radio broadcast. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 Yeah, I'd say the best sounding available is the Oslo, which was also on film, and the Paris. Quote
Pete C Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 The sound on Stuttgart is reasonable, and it's such a great performance. Quote
John L Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 The sound on Stuttgart is reasonable, and it's such a great performance. Yes, especially the second disc! (Orange Was the Color, So Long Eric, Peggy's Blue Skylight) Quote
David Ayers Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I've had this stuff over so many faceless boots I have no idea which is which. Quote
