tonym Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I caught the tail end of the Jazz Record Requests show the other day and came in during what sounded like a typical Blue Note hard bop tune. "Sounds familiar", I thought. Anyway, turns out it was Candy by Lee Morgan from the album of the same name. . I know many bop tunes were based on standards, but this one sounded so very familiar it was driving me mad. It's bound to be a really obvious one too. Haven't got that that session so I can't keep going back and listening to it. Can anyone help and tell me which tune it is based upon? cheers, tonym. Quote
chris Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 Well, Candy is itself a standard, isn't it? Morgan, Johnny Mercer, Chet Baker-- that tune's gotten some play. Quote
JSngry Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 (edited) Yep. Big Maybelle had a hit with it, and I think Dinah Washington did too. Juke box fodder, this one was. Top-40 all the way in its day, before Lee go hold of it. Hell, my old man used to request it whenever he came to hear me work w/a female singer, so you KNOW it was popular! The changes themselves are pretty generic, though. Think "Perdido" and you're there. Edited January 19, 2004 by JSngry Quote
tonym Posted January 19, 2004 Author Report Posted January 19, 2004 Really!!!! I had no idea it was an established tune --- who wrote it? This is one that has slipped under my radar. Thanks fellas. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 David / Whitney / Kramer Don't know the first names & what else they wrote. Maybe someone does. Quote
