Hardbopjazz Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) This should be done for more of the jazz greats in the US. I am glad to see this for John and Paul, but why not George and Ringo? LONDON (AP) — The childhood homes of former Beatles John Lennon and Paul McCartney, where the pair wrote some of their early songs, will be preserved, the government said Wednesday. Lennon's house in south Liverpool and McCartney's nearby row home will be granted a grade 2 listing, which means they cannot be altered without the permission of local officials, said Britain's Heritage Minister John Penrose. The decision means the homes of one of Britain's greatest songwriting teams will be protected for generations to come. Their work has long been associated with the northern port city Liverpool, particularly because of songs like "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" that celebrated their childhood haunts. article Edited February 29, 2012 by Hardbopjazz Quote

Quincy Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 George lived in one house for 6 years and then moved. So which is more important? Maybe the busstop is? Ringo doesn't remember the inside of his childhood home. He spent quite awhile in the hospital as a kid so maybe that's a place the fan seeks out instead. If you map the homes George & Ringo are not as close together as John & Paul's homes are. And I don't know, after you've seen 2 of these types of houses do you need a 3rd & a 4th, and another 90 minutes or whatever of driving around? I'd rather visit George's place in Hawaii myself. I used to have an aunt who lived in Liverpool. In the early '70s of course none of this was considered tourist material. By the late '70s they started to have an inkling that maybe some people might have a little interest, probably due to street sign theft. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 I must confess, I really don't get this "preserving former homes" thing. Quote

thedwork Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 (edited) ...but why not George and Ringo? there's a fairly obvious answer to that of which i'm sure everyone here is aware. but i'm w/ jazzmoose - i don't get the preserving of homes. i guess it's kind of a museum (a really weird rubbernecking, peeping-tom type of museum), but why not just make an actual museum? or, in this case, just listen to the music... There was a pretty good documentary about him. http://www.amazon.com/Stuart-Sutcliffe-Beatle-Rosie-McGinnity/dp/B000G1ALE8 i also really, really enjoyed the film Backbeat about the early days of the Beatles which, as i recall, had Sutcliffe (art student, right?) as the lead role in the film w/ Lennon. but it was quite a while ago now since i've seen it. very good soundtrack as well...
