BeBop
Several other sources report that Red Holloway has passed. If true, a sad loss. Edited February 26, 2012 by BeBop
JSngry
A sad loss indeed. Red Holloway was a BAAAAAAAAD man.
Dan Gould
Very sad to hear. Loved his playing on records and one of the best south Florida shows I attended was Red backed by Eddie Higgins.
BillF
I saw him play with Sonny Stitt at Mac's, 100 Oxford Street in London in about 1982. (I think you saw them there, too, JohnS?) Wikipedia is giving yesterday as the date of his death, which would make him 84.
king ubu
Seems to be official now: http://jazztimes.com/sections/news/articles/29538-saxophonist-red-holloway-dead-at-84 Sad news. Seems he had quite a life... and quite a wonderful style, too! Grew to love the albums he made with Jack McDuff.
CJ Shearn
RIP. He always cooked with McDuff and added some great playing to his final 2 albums.

Stereojack
A great musician - one of the last of a dying breed of booting tenor players. RIP
Hardbopjazz
Wow, another loss. R.I.P. Red. Thanks for the music.

Gheorghe
After Eddie Lockjaw Davis had died, Red Holloway who used to play with Jaws came to Vienna quite often. I remember him well. Very good musician, and such a nice guy. Once I took a person who before that was unfamiliar to jazz, to the club to catch a show with Red Holloway and he sure liked it. sidewinder
Very sad news, RIP. Yes, he played over here a lot too - as mentioned, especially so after Lockjaw's passing.

JohnS
I saw him play with Sonny Stitt at Mac's, 100 Oxford Street in London in about 1982. (I think you saw them there, too, JohnS?) Wikipedia is giving yesterday as the date of his death, which would make him 84. Sad news indeed. I saw him at a venue near Croydon IIRC Bill. Stitt was nearing the end and wasn't looking so good but they played really well.

The Magnificent Goldberg
Another classic bit of Chicago music Red was on Otis Rush - I can't quit you baby - Cobra, 1956 I think I've got all of Red's albums except 'Sax, strings and soul', on Prestige, which Fantasy never reissued. Well... A really booting tenor player, whom I love. But on alto, very different, very lyrical. I think I like him even more on alto.
