Michael Weiss Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) Sorry no details. Just heard this morning.... One of the greats and an important mentor to so many Chicago musicians. Edited February 13, 2012 by Michael Weiss Quote
king ubu Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Oh shit, that's sad. Very much an unsung hero. r.i.p. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Oh no .... I instantly loved his playing style when I first heard him on those many Eddie Harris records - still have them. Then I heard a John Klemmer track from a Chess LP on the radio, and wrote the moderator if it was Jodie Christian on piano - he answered I was right and complemented me on my ears. I've been following his career ever since. One of those many players without whom the scene would be much less varied an interesting. R.I.P., and many thanks for your inspiring piano. Quote

J.A.W. Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Very sad. He was 80 (born Feb.2, 1932). Quote
johnlitweiler Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 What a good and kind man, along with being a wonderfully versatile pianist. He created joy for six decades. Here's an interview he gave me 10 years ago: http://jazztimes.com/articles/19751-jodie-christian-perfect-accompaniment Quote
king ubu Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Just found and read your piece - very nice! Here's another one: http://www.chicagojazz.com/magazine/jodie-christian-supporting-role-637.html Quote
JSngry Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Somebody whose name on a record made it that much more likely that I'd buy it. RIP, and thank you. Quote
Free For All Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear this. I played and recorded with Jodie in Chicago, he was a great musician and friend. I learned a lot from him. Rest in Peace. Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Sad news. RIP. The only Jodie Christian CD I own is this one and it's a good one. I will listen to it later in his honor. Quote
johnlitweiler Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Here's another one: http://www.chicagojazz.com/magazine/jodie-christian-supporting-role-637.html Thanks for the link, King. That one is even better because for the first (only?) time in print he mentions his ministry and his Parkinson's. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Sorry to hear this, sounds like he was a nice guy. RIP. Quote
Justin V Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I've only heard his playing on Ira Sullivan's Blue Stroll and Mike Smith's Unit 7, both of which are very enjoyable. After recently acquiring the Smith album, I was looking forward to hearing more of Christian's music. RIP. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Thanks for linking the interviews - very nice. Thanks to delmark he was able to record frequently - here's another one: Quote
