chuckyd4
I just saw this one available on EMusic, but am trying to economize my downloading capabilities. Has anyone heard this session? It features Nat Adderley, Barry Harris, and Billy Higgins, for starters, and is supposed to be good solid straightforward hard bop. God it sounds tantalizing, but I remember being a little underwhelmed by the Blue Note two-fer that came out a couple of years ago of Wilkerson's stuff. BFrank
I was thinking about that one, myself. Haven't listened to the clips yet, though.
Rooster_Ties
I like "Texas Twister" a whole bunch, in fact - I like it better than any of Wilkerson's BN dates. I found it used on CD for about $8, took a chance, and felt it was WELL worth it. Here are some quotes from others here on the board, about "Texas Twister"... I have all of his BN stuff except Preach Brother, and also have Texas Twister. Shoutin is my favorite of the BN stuff. The reason I don't have Preach Brother is just that it did nothing for me. I thought it was the weakest of his output and Sonny Clark seemed out of place to me. The best, but not BN, is Texas Twister. Great cd. Well, the Wilkerson BNs might not be to everbody's taste, but I'd think that TEXAS TWISTER would be! That bad boy KICKS AYE-ESS!! And here's another exchange (buried in a thread about Wynton), with more from Sangry, and a reply from Kevin... Ok, still not digging Wilkerson? Fair enough. BUT... Before you TOTALLY write him off, check THIS baby out: None of the R&B "trappings" of the BN stuff. Just good solid soulful straightahead blowing. If you don't dig THIS one, then you can safely be said to have no use for Don Wilkerson, period. Jim, I've been digging this CD for years. It does smoke... and I mean really smoke!! Of course, I also happen to like the Blue Note material too. I happen to dig the "R&B trappings". Give me "Dem Tambourines"! Kevin So if you're on the fence, then get it!!!! chuckyd4
If it's good enough for Mr. Sangrey, it's good enough for me. B) I am officially 7 downloads poorer for this month....
mikeweil
It features Nat Adderley, Barry Harris, and Billy Higgins, for starters, and is supposed to be good solid straightforward hard bop. That is what it looks like, and that's what it is for sure! A little less R&B than the Blue Notes, but still some touches of it.
