chris Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 As a counterbalance to the ebay madness threads, does anyone ever get a great deal, a real steal from ebay? I sure don't seem to it happening! Quote
Big Wheel Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 Well, not when you're looking for OOP Mosaic Boxes and other assorted rarities, although the occasional one crops up with a low Buy it Now price every once in a while. There probably are deals to be had on Ebay but the "steal" of getting a $17 in-print CD for $5 doesn't quite match the drama of someone paying $200 for the McLean Mosaic. Quote
chris Posted January 18, 2004 Author Report Posted January 18, 2004 Fortunately (maybe), I have a heck of a lot more on my want-list than Mosaic and other boxed sets... people must be using Ebay, otherwise they spend way too much time looking for outlandishly BAD deals Quote
Claude Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I've seen OOP Mosaics go for less than half the usual ebay.com price on Ebay Germany. Some of these auctions didn't even have "Mosaic" in the title, the sellers probably didn't know these sets are high in demand amongst collectors. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I've bought some Siemens vacuum tubes pretty darned cheap with little bidding competition off ebay, probably because Siemens was not spelled correctly . . . got them for about a third of the normal "reasonable" price, and five of them at that. So that was a nice steal! Quote
jacknife Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I'm not sure that it's really a steal but I got a sealed copy of Kenny Dorham - Trumpeta Toccata for $12. One of the few times that I felt like I got a good deal on ebay! Quote
undergroundagent Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I bought the Larry Young Mosaic on Ebay for $100...I thought that was a pretty good deal. I never really find myself overspending on Ebay in terms of the going rate...a deal can always be had if your patient. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I find I do better on eBay if I just check out what's closing at the time and see if there's anything I want rather than looking for specific items. Although you do have to sort through a lot of crap that way...stuff like John Tesh in Jazz, things like that. But patience is definitely the key! Quote
Tjazz Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 On the other end, sometimes there is a good BUY IT NOW. So the early bird catches the bargain. Quote
JohnJ Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 Good deals can most definitely be had, you just have to be disciplined and patient. Also, the best bargains often occur when the seller does not correctly or fully describe the item they are selling. I picked up the third and last Rosemary Clooney Bear Family Box for a little over $30 on eBay UK from a seller that did not mention Bear Family in the listing or provide a photograph. This usually sells for over $100. Quote
street singer Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 Well, I can't say that I've gotten any insanely good deals on eBay, but...I've gotten a few fairly good ones. Tina Brook's 'Minor Move' and 'The Waiting Game' for about $7 I thought was a good deal. I've picked up many in-print CDs for about $3 or $4, mostly browsing through the Ending Today and Going, Going, Gone stuff. I also have a large list of favorites that I continually revise, most of which I receive email notifications on whenever something new is listed that matches that description. That is a very handy tool that I've had some luck with. As stated previously, patience is definitely the key when buying on eBay. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 You can get some good deals on ebay, but in my case, if I keep looking for stuff, I end up buying; and if I buy a lot of stuff then only a handful are at bargain prices. So you've got to be both patient and disciplined. I don't even watch ebay now, because I've decided to curb my cd spending. If I just decided to watch for good deals then I might be tempted to go after something else. Best just not to watch auctions. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I got a Leslie speaker, model 21H for my Hammond for $650 which I consider a steal. It was in Chicago too, so I just went and picked it up (Chi-town is about 4 hours from here). You usually can't get a full sized Leslie like that for under $1k. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I got me a sealed copy of the Duke Ellington Centennial 24-CD box set on ebay Germany for 75 EUROS! That was a great steal for me! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I picked up the Buck Clayton Mosaic plus 7 or 8 other Buck CDs for 112.00. The Mosaic set wasn't mentioned by the seller, but I could see it in the accompanying scan. I turned around and sold it for 260.00 the week after I got it. I also sold a couple of the other Bucks, and kept the rest. Quote
Eric Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I have SOLD a few things for stupid prices that I never thought I would achieve. A Joe Farrell CTI CD for $40 comes to mind ... Eric Quote
doubleM Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I got a Japanese copy of Cliff Jordan (early BN w/ Lee Morgan) for $6.00 U.S. plus shipping. It was way OOP at the time, so I giggled with glee when no one outbid me on it. B) Quote
bary01 Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 my last good deal , a very nice copy of DEXTER GORDON blue note 4416 (mono , fisrt issue NY usa label ) in Mint condition for 25 Euros ( ebay france ) gilles Cannonball RDV Quote
