CraigP Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 I heard the band play an all new set, the next album in NYC two weeks ago at the Greenwich House Music. Two longish compositions...the drummer is also playing the melodies on vibes along with the band now. He's also playing more percussion, bongos(!), small gongs too. Matt Mitchell and Oscar Noriega are stars on the rise. I'm looking forward to a new album when it comes out someday. I love the new sound with the vibes. Cool! Is there definitely a new album coming on ECM? Quote

David Ayers Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Tim Berne: Snakeoil Salesman What does his new major-label exposure mean to an avowed avant-gardist? by Nate Chinen Thanks for posting that. I share his view of ECM as a constructive outlet for creative work. Quote
CraigP Posted July 5, 2012 Report Posted July 5, 2012 Nice article. I didn't know his wife heads up ECM in America. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 11, 2013 Report Posted November 11, 2013 Recently picked up both of the Snakeoil albums during their performance at the Jazz Standard. So far only listened to the 1st one. Very good Quote
etherbored Posted November 19, 2013 Report Posted November 19, 2013 (edited) his new snakeoil release is entitled 'shadow man'; http://ecmrecords.com/Catalogue/ECM/2300/2339.php?cat=&we_start=0&lvredir=3092 this is what guy refers to as 'both' perhaps? Edited November 19, 2013 by etherbored Quote
colinmce Posted November 19, 2013 Report Posted November 19, 2013 Yes. These are two of my favorite records of the last several years. Really special music that rewards much re-listening. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 20, 2013 Report Posted November 20, 2013 New one is excellent! Quote
mjazzg Posted November 20, 2013 Author Report Posted November 20, 2013 I'll join the chorus of approval for the latest one too Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 18, 2014 Report Posted January 18, 2014 Have been listening to the second Snakeoil album, The Shadow Man. I liked the 1st album just fine, but those who found it too "tame" or ECM-ish should at the very least give TSM a listen. Much harder-hitting. Quote

I've heard it a few times this week. Quote
GA Russell Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 I listened to the Snakeoil album from 2012 yesterday and today, and I was struck by how much it reminded me of Henry Cow. I was a big Henry cow fan back in the day, and I enjoyed listening to Snakeoil. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 This Tim Berne album reminds me of The Soft Machine: Tremendous record. Off-kilter electric jazz. Quote
Leeway Posted February 10, 2014 Report Posted February 10, 2014 Now that I've been listening to Soft Machine, Elton Dean, etc, I'll have to go back to that Berne album and check it out. I just want to add that Berne's playing over the last 2 years has been at a remarkably high level. He's been doing a lot of gigs around NYC, with Snakeoil, and with other ensembles, and I think he has hit a new high in his performance. Maybe this is a renewed vigor. Anyway, I think it is reflected in the current album. Quote
