felser Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 (edited) I do like that one, but Savoy overall had the ugliest album covers I've ever seen. Bizarre graphic images and/or horrendous retouched photography. No wonder John Coates Jr. never recorded for a major label again and scurried back to Bucks County, after what Savoy did to him when he was 18. On the other hand, they did let him record as a trio with Wendell Marshall and Kenny Clarke as an 18 year old. And he held his own just fine, thank you very much. JSngry Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 If you squint just a little, you can use your imagination and see Jerry Lewis talking to Joe Dimaggio. Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I meant to the music, though the cover does have its own geeky charm. Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 There's some kind of joke going on in that photo...Look at J.R., he's all like "yeah, let's look like this paper has notes or something on it and that we're studying the great music we're about to make. Then let's go get high!" and Eddie Bert's all like, "what do you mean, GET high?" HA! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Never much paid attention to the cover. Good music though. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 The Music from the Eddie Bert - Encore - session plus all the other Eddie Bert material from Savoy can be found on this 2 CD set : Eddie Bert Quartet & Quintet - Crosstown - Fresh Sound FSR-CD 427 Quote
jazzbo Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Encore was also a cd all on its own from Savoy/Denon, from 1993 or so. Quote
gmonahan Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Encore was also a cd all on its own from Savoy/Denon, from 1993 or so. I have that one. Bert was a classic example of an underrated trombonist. Fine style, great tone. gregmo Quote
