AllenLowe Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 apparently the latest issue of Jazzwise has a review of Blues and the Empirical Truth. Does anyone here subscribe to this publication? Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 seems to be the trend... Quote
Clunky Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 I do , it gets a brief review only , I'll look it up when I get home Quote
mjazzg Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 here goes...short and sweet "Epic three disc set from post-Zorn saxophonist with raw blues at its centre and a A-list left-field NYC band that features Marc Ribot, Roswell Rudd and Matthew Shipp" that's it. Scores 3 stars (out of five) Quote
jazzbo Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Excuse me? I'm sending them a package of QTips. Quote

Hot Ptah Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Post-Zorn? Somehow I doubt that this was Allen's career ambition, to become known as post-Zorn. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 (edited) that's the whole review? They should demand he return the review copy. Thank you for getting that, I've been trying to keep an eye out for the foreign press. Edited January 30, 2012 by AllenLowe Quote
sidewinder Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Is it just me or is 'Jazzwise' getting very diluted these days? Scanned the latest copy in 'Ray's' yesterday but was undewhelmed with the jazz content and didn't bother buying it. Likewise 'Jazz Journal' - half of that was 'Critics Polls'. More meat required ! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 31, 2012 Author Report Posted January 31, 2012 and longer reviews. And a few more stars. Quote

I gave up on both these publications some time ago. I found I could get more information about jazz from being a member of this forum! Quote
David Ayers Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 half of that was 'Critics Polls' Ditchwater that even a ditch would reject. Quote

I gave up on both these publications some time ago. I found I could get more information about jazz from being a member of this forum! I gave up both but recently started back with Jazzwise. I view JJ as a lost cause. The latter had almost nothing on current jazz (of any type). Jazzwise is still pretty reasonable, worth getting IMO. Quote
mjazzg Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I'm still buying Jazzwise, just. It manages to have some interesting interviews that keep me shelling out, e.g. Berne and Glasper in the current edition and Ornette recently. I do enjoy the writing of Kevin Le Gendre which can't be found elsewhere AFAIK. Review section increasingly redundant as they were always about info not opinion for me and I've now more often than not discovered about the recording online. Quote

If he says some new release is the business I'm likely to take note. Other writers need to be approached with caution. Quote
bneuman Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I don't know about anybody else, but that's how I usually think about music - pre-Zorn, Zorn, and post-Zorn. Pre-Zorn is typified by artists like Bach, Charlie Parker, Dean Martin, and Led Zeppelin. Then, of course, there's Zorn, who needs no introduction. I've yet to hear any post-Zorn music that's really caught my ear. It's all that middle-of-the-road, three-star kind of stuff. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 That's definitely not a part of my classifications. I am not a Zorn fan and don't own any of his recordings. . . . Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I tend to go for pre-Hildegard of Bingen, Hildegard of Bingen and post-Hildegard of Bingen, myself. Not much happened in that last phase. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Not to speak for Ben, but I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm guys. Quote
