colllin Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Hello. I'm looking for recommendations on recordings where the upright bass player mixes in some pizzicato chords. Upright bass players usually play single note sequences, so when they introduce chords it creates a cool effect. Why is it so uncommon? Is it technically difficult? Ron Cater does it on the Charles Bell Quartet's "My Favorite Things" and Gary Peacock does it a lot on Paul Bley's Mr. Joy. What else is out there? Thank you for your help. -Colin Quote
jazzbo Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 This is an Alex Blake specialty. His album "Now is the Time" is a great one. He also is excellent with Randy Weston, who certainly lets him do his thing. He is well presented in the DVD or cd of "Live at St. Lucia." Quote
king ubu Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Guess there'd be some examples on the lovely "Zep Tepi" disc, too?Saw the trio live a couple of years ago and it was magnificient. Blake was especially wonderful, very joyous and playful... he played seated on a barstool and the bass looked like a little cello in his hands... Quote
Pete C Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 Jimmy Garrison too, especially in his flamencoesque solos. Check out his playing on: Also on some of the European tour stuff with Trane where he gets to stretch out. Quote
