king ubu Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Is he sure about the "have been remastered with loving care and deliver sterling sound" part regarding those cheapo reissues? I've got the Tubby and it doesn't bother me... but I were to champion a few recent reissues/found bits, I'd go with the Tubby discs that have appeared on Candid (Tubby's New Groove) and Savage Solveig (Dancing in the Dark - The Tubby Hayes Archives Vol. 2) - both among my favorite jazz releases of the past year! Furthermore, there's also "Complete Recordings 1958-59" by Tommy Whittle (no longer sold direclty by amazon UK it seems, although only released in May 2011). And finally, the entire "London Jazz Quartet" album is part of both the Tubby Hayes 3CD set (from last year and previously discussed here) and has been reissued separately, as well. To me, it seems a bit of a stretch to use just these recordings to make the (valid) point about neglect of UK jazz. I'd look elsewhere... and if was about Tubbs, I'd put the stress on recordings from a few years later! Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 my favorite British jazz is an old Black Lion lp with Philly Joe Jones and a bunch of people (may have Peter King on it). Excellent hard bop. Better than their food. Quote
Head Man Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 Better than their food. Grrrrrrr!....don't get me started.I never ate as poorly as when I visited the US last year. I think we should stick to the music! Quote
king ubu Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 (edited) I've heard that Black Lion LP, Allen - got to do some digging... and you got to explore some prime Tubby some day! As for food... I've got a continental stomach Edited January 3, 2012 by king ubu Quote
Dave James Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 my favorite British jazz is an old Black Lion lp with Philly Joe Jones and a bunch of people (may have Peter King on it). Excellent hard bop. Better than their food. It's called Mo' Joe. FWIW, it's available from iTunes for only $5.94. Quote

sidewinder Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 (edited) Rumour has it that this is now Britain's favourite dish: Never did have a decent one of those in North America. The nearest 'approximation' was in Santa Monica and that was de-tuned/laced with orange for the local palate. They didn't get the spices and herbs right either (although there was enough to feed 10 ). Is he sure about the "have been remastered with loving care and deliver sterling sound" part regarding those cheapo reissues? The music on that Tubby 3CD set is great but the sound to me is sort of flat/2-dimensional. A shortcoming that I have found with many of these recent reissues. The Tempo master tapes are long gone - best sound to date has been achieved on the Sawano vinyl reissues (which must themselves be needle-drops). The sound on 'Dancing In The Dark' is fine - better than one could hope for considering it was recorded by that Nottingham club ('Foo' Kinnell arranged it I think).
