mjzee Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Google's Ad Preferences Manager Here's where Google shows the inferences they've made about you based on what they've collected about you. You can also "opt-out" of their tailoring ad results based on your search history; I doubt they'll stop collecting information about you, however. Do you really trust their voracious data appetite at this point? Do a Google search for "Ad Preferences Manager" for related web pages on this subject. Quote

Do you really trust their voracious data appetite at this point? I've tried this and it still isn't working for me. Several months ago a friend sent a joke email with a link about Time-Life releasing the complete DVD package for the 6 Million Dollar Man TV series. As kids we were fans. When we'd run around the neighborhood we'd make the various sound effect noises when running or jumping, talk about how cool it'd be to have a bionic eye or just be bionic, and he even had the doll. Hence the email. Ever since visiting that damn Time-Life on this site, or in Google Reader, and other sites guess what ad I almost always see? I went into preferences and deleted the obvious cookies. I've used the above Google link to try to get rid of it. I think I'm stuck with the ad for life, which in the scheme of things it certainly could be worse. It's pretty damn funny actually, although now I find myself thinking I can bike better than I really can. Better...stronger...faster... Edited February 5, 2012 by Quincy Quote
Leeway Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 JSngrey and I got into a discussion of rappers and Eames chairs; now I have a Herman Miller chair ad whenever I open the site. I'm starting to feel the need to get one. One suggestion is to open Organissimo on its own tab, and to open a new tab when you want to migrate to other sites. Quote
JSngry Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 So...is the Google Ad program tracking our posts here, or at least looking for key words? Or did you do some searching for chairs during the course of that conversation? Quote
mjzee Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 My impression, although I've never read it explicitly, is that as long as you are logged into Google, in any way, they will track and record whatever web sites you visit, even if it's not directly from a Google search results page. I have yet to see any assurances to the contrary. Quote

medjuck Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Well maybe someday they'll be an ad for some re-issue we didn't know about. I'm often surprised by Amazon suggestions for things I didn't know existed but which I want when I do know about them. Quote
GA Russell Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Today's ad for me was a link to Amazon for the double-CD of the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond's last concert. I wish they were all that relevant. I clicked on it. Quote

Pete C Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 Would there be any objections to blocking the dating sites? At least the ones that appeal to "specific appetites" rather than the general urge for companionship? I just got one that said "meet hot atheists in Brooklyn." Quote
JSngry Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 The new Singlesnet ads are pretty damn distracting, but in a good way, even though it's still bad, if that makes any sense. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 The new Singlesnet ads are pretty damn distracting, but in a good way, even though it's still bad, if that makes any sense. Yes I started getting them yesterday. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 (edited) I've had some odd ones recently - a link to Gillian Weir organ CDs and places that sell organs. Yesterday a gay dating site (I'm too old and boringly straight!) But I am glad to have got this one in time: http://the-end.com/2008GodsFinalWitness/?gclid=CN_fxtOT8K4CFYwMtAodlwHfJw Hopefully there will be a link to a site for cheap canned food soon. JSngry Posted April 12, 2012 Report Posted April 12, 2012 I'm getting Frosted Mini-Wheats ads in Spanish. Quote

Brad Posted May 8, 2012 Report Posted May 8, 2012 I wonder how effective are the ads that show up here. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 19, 2012 Author Report Posted November 19, 2012 Ok, in light of the very tepid response from the current fundraiser, I've added a small banner ad to the bottom of the forum. I think it's pretty out of the way, all things considered. I've also added an Amazon search widget to the index page. If you use that widget to access items on Amazon and purchase something, we get a cut. Please consider using it during this holiday season. Thanks! Quote
JSngry Posted November 29, 2012 Report Posted November 29, 2012 Best GoogleAd Link EVER!!!! High Anxiety like a MO! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted December 3, 2012 Author Report Posted December 3, 2012 Dang. That's pretty intense. Quote
JSngry Posted December 3, 2012 Report Posted December 3, 2012 Quite! Are you sure you want that much intensity on a jazz board? Seriously - I love it. Quote
