EKE BBB Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 The new label jazzhausLast Friday Arthaus Musik GmbH and SWR Media Services GmbH presented the new Label jazzhaus at the Ellington Hotel Berlin. It was founded to publish live concerts from jazz legends like Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane or Miles Davis on CD, DVD and vinyl as well as on audio/video-on-demand download. The archive of Südwestrundfunk contains more than 3.000 hours footage of all major modern jazz artists. It’s the biggest collection of unpublished live jazz recordings in the world from 1949 until today. The first CDs will be available next week (November 14th): Legends Live Gerry Mulligan (live at Liederhalle Stuttgart, 1977) Art Blakey (live at Sängerhalle Untertürkheim, 1978) Cannonball Adderley (live at Liederhalle Stuttgart, 1969) Bigbands Live Duke Ellington Orchestra (live at Liederhalle Stuttgart, 1967) Benny Goodman Orchestra feat. Anita O’Day (live at Stadthalle Freiburg, 1959) Jazzhaus link Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Sounds cool - I hope they get to release everything that's worthy. Couple of nits to pick though - why no list of sidemen in the CD pages and too bad they went with such generic cover designs. Quote
gnhrtg Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Thank you for letting us know. I will be looking forward to getting some of their releases, as long as they are conveniently available from the usual/major retailers. I agree with Dan, though: not well done at all on the horrible covers and the lack of information on sidemen on the website. Quote
Daniel A Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 JPC has sideman info and sound clips: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/art/Julian-Cannonball-Adderley-1928-1975-Legends-Live-Liederhalle-Stuttgart-20-03-1969/hnum/1617605 http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/art/Gerry-Mulligan-Legends-Live-Liederhalle-Stuttgart-22-11-1977/hnum/1617623 http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/art/Julian-Cannonball-Adderley-1928-1975-Legends-Live-Liederhalle-Stuttgart-20-03-1969/hnum/1617605 Quote
king ubu Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 Sounds like a similar venture to what WDR has been doing with Jazzline/LaserLight? I wish them good luck... bet if they're trying to do it the right way (I'm not insinuating they don't!), it takes a lot of time and money and patience to clear up rights for these recordings! Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 29, 2011 Author Report Posted December 29, 2011 Although I have no insider information, we can most surely state with certainty that they're doing it the right way, this is, paying to the rightholders... or have you ever seen an Andorran emporium publicly presenting a new label in a press release? So, let's not bother about minimum details (covers, info from the website!!!) and let's congratulate we're getting more Ellington, more Goodman, more Adderley... live material! Quote
mikeweil Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 The arthaus people involved have an excellent reputation for their DVD editions, many of which are collaborations with local TV companies - this looks real good. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 I'm curious about the Goodman - the personnel on the cover includes Red Norvo's group from that time, which was excellent. Quote
king ubu Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 Ah well, depending on your point of origin, it's same music from different source Either way, it does look good! Problem is that some original tapes were deleted/re-used, whatever... it would have been too great to hear the complete Basie & Ella live shows, for instance! But there's still lots of material to be found there, that's for sure! Quote

Lost Tapes – a new series with extraordinary often forgotten studio recordings from Baden Baden and Mainz is launched. Big Beat Steve Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 Pulled the trigger on the Diz and Zoot CDs (would have loved the vinyl but THREE times the CD price - well, hey ..) Thanks for highlighting these items, EKE BBB ! Now I'd really wish they'd dig a bit beyond the all-time greatest names and come up with a few of their gems that they have on comparatively underrecorded (but nevertheless classy and deserving) jazz acts from that era, particularly European ones. They are BOUND to have tons of tapes on file there ... Quote
king ubu Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 These new ones look good! But I've not even got any of the first batch yet ... thanks for sharing the news! Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 5, 2012 Report Posted October 5, 2012 I will say that I have some other Benny from that time and tour, and that Jack Sheldon's playing is astounding - the guy is really one of the greatest trumpeters ever. Quote

Clunky Posted November 8, 2012 Report Posted November 8, 2012 Listening to Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet (Live at Audimax Freiburg) very good period sound and great playing. Recommended. This is the only one I've gone for in the series. Quote
romualdo Posted November 9, 2012 Report Posted November 9, 2012 Jutta Hipp release looks interesting but correct me if I'm wrong - looks like it's only an LP releaseMDT (UK) has the CDs for £ 6.75 (£5.12 for those of us who don't have to pay VAT) http://www.mdt.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=jazz+haus&t=general&order=most_viewed Quote
