Hardbopjazz
I am listening to a Lambert, Hendricks and Ross LP. What a fine pianist Gildo Mahones was. Outside of playing woth LH&R and his session, "The Great Gildo" and Wes Montgomey's "Good Git Together" I don't much more with him playing piano. As far as I know he is still alive, but does he still play? Edited December 27, 2011 by Hardbopjazz
Larry Kart
You might have better luck if you spelled his name correctly.
ValerieB
Gildo Mahones is still very much with us but spends most of his time these days playing for his gorgeous baby grandson. after living for many decades in L.A., he and his wife moved to Oakland, CA last year to be closer to their daughter. i know he has done some "sitting in" in SF and Oakland recently. JSngry
There's a Mahones Prestige date where Larry Young sits in on Bali Hai. That's pretty cool.
ValerieB
i'm sure Gildo must have recorded with Lorez Alexandria as well.
mikeweil
Yes, the albums with Alexandria were made for Discovery. Very nice playing by this pianist. That Prestige double LP can be found as a needle drop on some blog - I gave up finding a copy. That track with Young is less spectacular than one might expect. But this is a very nice piano album, overall. The two Prestige albums of Pony Poindexter feature Mahones, too, and are very nice.
sidewinder
That Prestige double LP can be found as a needle drop on some blog - I gave up finding a copy. I came across a fairly good copy in a NYC vinyl shop (Academy?) some years ago for $10 or so. It had a (bearable) scratch on one of the sides so I passed. Been really regretting it ever since ! mikeweil
When he says "bio" he is talking about his entry in German Wikipedia. Edited December 29, 2011 by mikeweil

brownie
Gildo Mahones is alive and well... From the Berkeleyside site: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2013/09/12/a-jazz-veterans-new-start/
Justin V
I'm only familiar with him through his fine work on Frank Foster's Blue Note session, Here Comes Frank Foster (which was reissued with a George Wallington date featuring Foster). It's great to hear that he is still active; I'd love to hear him in person.

Larry Kart
Mahones is in particularly fine form on Booker Ervin's (previously mentioned) "The Blues Book" and "Groovin' High." He has his own "tippin' light" thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfRQI2NTN8Y
