Dan Gould Posted December 24, 2011 Report Posted December 24, 2011 AT least when I saw that 80s CD, I was smart enough to put it back in the rack. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 Here's a pic of Billy Mitchell the sax man with Joe Turner and members of the King Porter band (taken from the "Before Motown" book) in 1948. Is it only my imagination or does he look uncannily like young Wynton M., He Who Must Not Be Named On This Forum, here? Quote

After some months I still often listen to his Xanadu 'De Lawd's Blues' and 'Colossus Of Detroit'. What a great, soulful and strong sax player. Quote
Free For All Posted January 3, 2012 Report Posted January 3, 2012 When I joined Woody Herman in '84 we went to Europe with extra guests Zoot Sims, Sal Nistico, Bill Perkins and Billy Mitchell (Mitchell's not associated with Woody's band as much as the others- IIRC he was a last minute replacement for another player). That was a great trip, getting to meet and hear those guys. I gained a greater appreciation of all those players after that, especially Zoot. Love Billy on The Magnificent Thad Jones. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 4, 2012 Report Posted January 4, 2012 I think Billy Mitchell and Thad Jones were a great combination! I love all their recordings together. Quote
marcello Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 A pretty good line up here, including Billy Mitchell: Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Take a guess, Chewy. Whose records were selling better in the mid-60s? Quote
