Ted O'Reilly Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 Debated whether the Miles Davis Bootleg was a "reissue" since it had not been officially released. Finally, I became comfortable with the distinction that the music was previously in the public domain. On my radio programme twenty-plus years ago, the late John Norris (of Coda Magazine and Sackville Records) and board-member Don Brown and I used to get together at the end of the year and play our Best Of The Year selections. We decided to do one show with New Releases, and to cover the quandary you face, to make the second show Reissues and Archival Recordings. We felt that put the newly-available older material was better placed with its more contemporaneous music. It seemed a fair way to handle it... Quote

king ubu Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 (edited) That's cool Allen! But bear with us non-promo-non-media-non-paid folks who struggle to keep up and collect old stuff, too (okay the last part may be an issue, but hey, you help flooding us with great old stuff, too, so don't complain too loudly!) Anyway, I'm not posting a best of 2011 list since I've hardly yet bought 10 new releases from this year... but in a few years, I might have enough of them to post a list - yet then no one will care any longer. Same thing each year... maybe I'm too patient, maybe I mis-allocate my budget, maybe whatever... but I'm no teenage fan waiting for the latest Olivia John single or Julie London cheesecake album cover. Not entirely sure why, but I keep lagging behind all the time... My favorite new releases of the year are: Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres (Constellation) John Zorn - Nova Express (Tzadik) Marilyn Crispell / Gerry Hemingway - Affinities (Intakt) all of which would get * * * * 1/2 from me. then there are pair of * * * * albums: Colin Vallon - Rruga (ECM) Arthur Doyle Electro-Acoustic Ensemble – Live In Nashville & Louisville (Sagittarius A-Star) and a much longer reissue list: * * * * * Julius Hemphill - Dogon A.D. (International Phonograph) Bill Dixon - Intents and Purposes (International Phonograph) [Cover sagt: 2010] Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Live (Sony/Legacy) Sidney Bechet - The Complete American Masters 1931-1953 (Universal) * * * * 1/2 Black Artists Group - In Paris Ariès (Rank and File) Charles Tolliver Big Band - Mosaic Select 37 (Mosaic) Art Pepper - Blues for the Fisherman (Widow's Taste) Stan Getz Quintets - The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums (Hip-O-Select) First Impulse: The Creed Taylor Collection 50th Anniversary (Hip-O-Select) * * * * Wes Montgomery - Movin': The Complete Verve Recordings (Hip-O-Select) Miles Davis - Tutu (Deluxe Edition) (Warner) Nathan Davis - Rules of Freedom (Universal) Eddy Louiss - Orgue (Universal) Swiss All-Stars (Sonorama) Various: Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl (Hip-O-Select) In the "from the archives" secion (where partly the Tolliver, Pepper, Miles BB Live and Jazz from Hollywood Bowl could also be listed), I have these: * * * * * Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967 (Bootleg Series Vol. 1) * * * * 1/2 G.F. Fitz-Gerald & Lol Coxhill - The Poppy-Seed Affair (Reel Recordings) Tubby Hayes - Tubby's New Groove (Candid) Tubby Hayes - Dancing in the Dark (The Tubby Hayes Archives Vol. 2) (Savage Solveig) * * * * Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald in Japan (Hip-O-Select) John Surman - Flashpoint: NDR Jazz Workshop April '69 (Cuneiform) And still, there's plenty of new stuff missing, including the Sam Rivers Select, which I've received a few weeks ago but haven't heard a second of yet. Also I've not caught up yet with Chuck's latest (I'm sure the new Roscoe would be on or near the top of the final list). Also haven't gotten several recent Mosaics, or else the Lunceford would be way on top somewhere, too... there's just so much you can handle, ain't there? (EDITED because I messed up and repeated the reissues list instead of including the archives list) Edited December 31, 2011 by king ubu Quote
