jazzkrow Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 http://www.amazon.com/Come-Sunday-Charlie-Haden/dp/B005NEJM02 I have been waiting two years for this CD. Recorded just a few months before Hank Jones' passing. Gospel and spirituals. Man, I miss Hank so much! I plan on getting this one the week it comes out. Great news.... (I know some of you did not dig the prior Steal Away. For late night listening in a quiet setting, it deeply moved me) Quote
king ubu Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I only recently discovered "Steal Away" and love it. Great to get more of this duo! Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I only recently discovered "Steal Away" and love it. Great to get more of this duo! i've been fortunate enough to own this recording since it was new. thanks for informing us of a second recording. Quote
six string Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I was in the middle of a serious Hank Jones lov-a-thon when Steal Away came out so of course I bought it. I've always loved it and I really like these piano/bass duo recordings that Charlie has been involved in over the last decade or two. There aren't any that I don't have a high regard for and I not many that I don't own. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I remember my brother and a friend of ours listening to Dtral Away all the time when it was new. I found a used copy last year! Thanks for the reminder! Perfect music for hanging with an infant! Right now he's conked out to Joanna Newsom... Quote
David Ayers Posted January 5, 2012 Report Posted January 5, 2012 I've always loved it and I really like these piano/bass duo recordings that Charlie has been involved in over the last decade or two. And not forgetting the one with Hampton Hawes from the 70s... Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 6, 2012 Report Posted January 6, 2012 Yep. Found that one sealed some time last year. Includes sheet music. Quote
jazzkrow Posted January 11, 2012 Author Report Posted January 11, 2012 Although "Come Sunday" did not meet the standard that Steal Away set, I am still pleased with this new issue. It is mostly sacred music with not as many hymns, and no folk songs. Reverential treatment, with a bit less swing/gospel feel. Charlie's solos are warm and strong and Hank does fit in some jazz feel. Highly recommend its purchase-I just preferred "Steal Away" a bit more. Very well recorded- as to acoustics-no question about that. Quote
six string Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 I've always loved it and I really like these piano/bass duo recordings that Charlie has been involved in over the last decade or two. And not forgetting the one with Hampton Hawes from the 70s... Yep! Got that one too (on vinyl). I picked up Come Sunday on Monday but so far I've only heard about two thirds of it. It's very good but I listened while waking up with my cup of joe so I can't say much about it yet but I will. It's my kind of "religious" music. Quote
