Brad Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 Its great when you aren't buying hardly anything and start to have time to revisit the old favorites more ... tonight I am swapping out the car CD case and now I am in the mood for some KD ... and some Jackie Mac! I have to start doing this Dan. I have just too much music. Almost 40 years. Kenny was underrate. Ditto on both counts Quote
david weiss Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 Some more..... Personnel anyone? I'm told them personnel on this one is Chick Corea, Louis Hayes and Butch Warren Quote
televiper Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 I've only just recently begun exploring Kenny Dorham's music but I've really dug what I've heard, especially "Quiet Kenny" and the Blue Note Recordings with Joe Henderson. Quote
Larry Kart Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Some very nice KD here, good Cannonball, too: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Spring-Kenny-Dorham/dp/B000000Y7S Quote
BillF Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Some very nice KD here, good Cannonball, too: http://www.amazon.co...m/dp/B000000Y7S Yes, lovely album! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Some very nice KD here, good Cannonball, too: http://www.amazon.co...m/dp/B000000Y7S Yes, lovely album! Yes, I am in total agreement. A terrific recording with excellent playing by Dorham and Cannonball. Quote

Joe Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Thanks so much for sharing this article. Some new info here for me. Quote
paul secor Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Does anyone else here have some favorite Kenny Dorham recordings? Mine are The Jazz Messengers at the Café Bohemia Volume 1, Quiet Kenny, and Showboat. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 KD wrote wonderfully and his work with Joe Hen makes for a great frontline contrast. Beyond that I don't feel qualified to comment, except to say the life story seems impossibly sad. Quote

In addition to the 60's Blue Notes with Henderson, I really like this one for the extended "Melanie" (McLean's "Melody for Melanie"). Also the 1956 "Jazz Prophets" album and the 1956 Cafe Bohemia recordings released on Blue Note.  But the Henderson recordings and "Matador" are the ones I come back to the most, especially "Trompeta Toccata". Rooster_Ties Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Can anyone comment on KD's appearance on Toshiko Akiyoshi's 1968 live album "Toshiko at Top of the Gate"? (On Nippon Columbia, if I've got my info right) Quote

It's Joe's record, but it could just as easily be Kenny's. Three of the five tunes are his, and they're all true gems, familiar vocabularies creatively structured, all quite evocative of a wholly different place than Generic. Same thing for his playing. He's the star of the record, imo, not that there ever needs to be one, just that sometimes it happens like that. Â Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 A gem. The four standards here -- "Alone Together," "My Ideal," "I Had the Craziest Dream," and "Old Folks" -- are superb. Â https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dorham+old+folks It's a paltry word for it, but the continuity! Quote
mikeweil Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 (edited) I really love his very first album, espeially the bonus track "Chicago" on the CD version where he sings. And the Monk tune ... nobody plays "Ruby My Dear" these days. Edited September 16, 2018 by mikeweil Quote
