Very sad news. He was part of what was probably the best national team never to win the World Cup. I was amazed when he came over to play for Garforth Town in the north of England seven years ago. I lived in that town for a number of years before moving to Japan. Would have loved to have met him; a kind of Gil Scott Heron in football boots.

What a great player he was!

He was one of the stars of the best soccer match I ever attended, the 1986 World Cup classic confrontation between Brazil and France at Guadalajara stadium in a quarterfinals match. Sadly for Socrates he missed his penalty kick and France won 4-3.

He deserved better than the last years of his life which seem to have been plagued by personal and health problems.
