Peter Friedman Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 I sold Hiroshi many LPs back more than 20 years ago, and have been a cd customer in more recent times. I e-mailed him a few days ago when I heard he was closing down. He sent me back a very very nice e-mail recalling all the things he had purchased from me and thanking me for all the great things he had received from me. A truly nice guy. Quote
Dan Gould Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 You know, we talk about how the internet did amazing things for far-flung collectors far away from the isle of Japan, but it works both ways. Hiroshi benefitted enormously as well, by expanding his customer base so much. Of course it didn't hurt that he offered fair prices and superior service. Quote
Bluesnik Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Hiroshi Tanno is closing down his store at the end of January, 2012. I have bought many CDs from him over the years; his service has always been impeccable and I am very sorry to see him go. i also heard about this some days back, but i completely agree with these words. always excellent packaging and service. it's a loss. RogerF Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 All of the above. A great loss of a great service and a true gentleman.Good luck for the future Hiroshi. Quote
Brad Posted February 10, 2021 Report Posted February 10, 2021 I just looked at his FB account and he hasn’t posted since 2019. Hope he’s ok. Quote
sjarrell Posted February 26, 2021 Report Posted February 26, 2021 this is from an hour ago, so yep Quote
Daniel A Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 I was hesitant to post this information here, but considering how important Hiroshi was to some of us I decided to share. Hiroshi suffered a stroke during the fall and lapsed into a coma. A couple of days ago he passed. I got this information from a mutual friend. My thoughts go to his family, and I will always cherish the music I got to hear at the time only because of him. Quote
sjarrell Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 Aw. There’s a post on his Facebook, too. Thanks for all the music, Hiroshi. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 Really sorry to hear this, Hiroshi was an absolute gent and professional and his LPs live on in many collections to be treasured. RIP and thanks. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 Damn, so sad to hear this! May he rest in peace. Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 Definitely sad to hear, a fine businessman and gentleman in all senses of the word. I hope his survivors know how many people appreciated him. Quote

Late Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 Damn. Deeply saddened to hear this. What a gem he was. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 (edited) Such sad news. Never bought from him but could not afford until after he had closed his shop. A legend. Edited February 19, 2022 by mikeweil Quote
sidewinder Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 Could hardly afford it when I did buy from Mr Tanno but it was such a pleasant experience, never any shipping problems and the boxes of LPs when they arrived were a joy to behold. Thank you Mr Tanno ! Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 He was a great connection to the Japanese market but it went beyond that. He was a real Jazz fan and record collector too. Sometimes, you felt like he was enjoying the hunt as much as you were. Quote
EKE BBB Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 A true gentleman. Never bought from him (I’m not into Japanese reissues) but we had quite a few email exchanges some 15 years ago. He kindly researched Tete Montoliu’s Japan tours for me. RIP Quote
Fer Urbina Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 Just saw it on FB. Really sorry to hear this. He was great to deal with and very friendly too. RIP. F Quote

When he tracked it down, he sent me a little celebratory email. Quote

Gheorghe Posted February 25, 2022 Report Posted February 25, 2022 Such a great person, and so nice ! My thoughts to his family. And strange as it is. During last week I played some CDs I had got from him. The Mini LP format CDs and the older editions Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 25, 2022 Report Posted February 25, 2022 I was just thinking about him yesterday because his name appeared in my Facebook account's upcoming-birthdays list. Bought a number of CDs from him when he was running his business and had some great email exchanges... he was also very supportive of Night Lights. Such a great guy, so sorry to learn of this news.
