I love his version of Twilight Time. The tune has a special place in my heart since it was written by a family member (Al Nevins, of The Three Suns).

This cd includes material when Roy was with Gene Krupa's band, Chu Berry's group and tracks under his own name.

The 22 tracks all date between 1936 and 1939.

Excellent choice!

Chu and Roy's version of "Body And Soul" from November 1938 was THE version until THE ULTIMATE version was recorded some months later.

For late Roy I also like the duo session on Pablo with Oscar Peterson. In fact, though I'm not a big Peterson fan, most of those duos with trumpeters are quite nice.

The key here is that Roy made so many wonderful recordings. Trying to identify one or even two favorites is, for me, an impossible task. I am pleased that we have so many of Roy's recordings

available for us to enjoy.

I hope the material goes to someplace like the Jazz Institute at Rutgers, so it can be properly catalogued and made available to scholars.
