CJ Shearn Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Yes, he is still alive. He wrote a tune called "Fingerlero" for the new George Benson album. Quote
Christiern Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Sometimes even performers take a breather. Look at Doris Day, she is topping British charts with her first album in 20 years. And, at 87, she's still got it! Quote
BeBop Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Alive (which I'm not sure is a requirement for appearing on a George Benson album ;-) ). I caught him in his hometown of the past five years or more, Las Vegas, with IIRC, his son Chris on drums. First time I saw Foster there (2007? 2008?) was in some funky* place under the freeway. More recently, he's been in the second tier casinos. Quote
paul secor Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Who's Ronnie Foster? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Foster Have to say that I didn't know either. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 There goes the whole "we're all Blue Note fetishists" meme. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 I think his Blue Note debut, The Two-Headed Freap, is a nice album ... but he preferred a career as a studio keyboarder to that on the B3 circuit. Quote
ejp626 Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 There goes the whole "we're all Blue Note fetishists" meme. Well, I had heard of Freap, but I was not aware that he had at least 3 other BN albums (2 appear to be Japanese imports only, the 3rd never on CD). If Mosaic was still going strong with the Select series, maybe his BN recordings would be a good candidate? Quote
Christiern Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 A highly overrated (yet great) label. Blue Note's output was not uniformly notable. The worst of Blue Note could be a boxed set, but such talk is sacrilege. Quote
BeBop Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Without suggesting that he made a career out of a short association with Blue Note, I'd note that it's still the cornerstone of every introduction I've heard in a newspaper or at a performance. (Being a Las Vegan also featured prominently in that locale.). Coincidentally, I picked up Freap in LV just before catching the mid-2000s concert. Quote

Nah, I think a lot of his output could be prominently featured in Chris' Worst of Blue Note box set. Quote
JSngry Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 I'm still working on figuring out the Freep Mystique myself. Quote
Leeway Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 I'm still working on figuring out the Freep Mystique myself. I think the attraction is centered on the word "freap." What is that? Freak + creep? Have no idea. Let alone "two-headed freap." Whatever it means, it compels interest in excess of musical value. Quote

phunkey Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Ronnie's not only alive, he even is on Facebook! I had the privilege of being 'friends' with him before FB locked my account for no reason and requested an ID scan to lift the ban - hilarious. Quote
