save0904 Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 This news makes me very sad! Rest in peace Paul! Quote
JohnS Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Awful. Such sad news. What wonderful music he made. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 On a lot of my favourite records. Excellent live too - played here quite often, sometimes with Brit/Euro bands. RIP Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Such a great musician. I really like the stuff he did with Lovano and Frisell on Winter & Winter, especially the Evans stuff. He'll be missed. Quote
7/4 Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Such a great musician. I really like the stuff he did with Lovano and Frisell on Winter & Winter, especially the Evans stuff. He'll be missed. What he said. I'm glad I caught him at the Vanguard a few times. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Such a great musician. I really like the stuff he did with Lovano and Frisell on Winter & Winter, especially the Evans stuff. He'll be missed. What he said. I'm glad I caught him at the Vanguard a few times. Yes, I'm glad I caught him live too. Quote
JohnT Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 RIP Paul Motian. Hope you're having a great reunion with Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro!! Quote
Justin V Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 I never had the chance to see him in concert. I'll have to listen to Enrico Rava's Tati, with Motian and Stefano Bollani. It features a beautiful version of Motian's 'Birdsong'. RIP. Quote
ValerieB Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 (edited) Terrific drummer, sometimes ** HIGHLY ** questionable bandleader. Granted, dude has to work but how you go from Charles Brackeen and David Izenzon to... ...effin' Lovano & Frisell (& speaking of Monk, that group's Monk album is TERRIBLE-- Paul included-- I dunno. Besides the Brackeen sides, I'll put on some Bley or Liberation Music Orchectra to remember. i think you should stay behind the barn with your negativity in a thread like this! Big Al Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Drat! RIP indeed. All I really know of his playing is the work he did with Bill Evans, but even then that would be enough for me to miss him. I especially love his playing on MOON BEAMS and HOW MY HEART SINGS, where it seems like he's doing something more sublime than just playing or accompanying. Quote
mjazzg Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 he's doing something more sublime than just playing or accompanying. and that just about sums it up for me. Such strength through restraint.. Instantly recognisable compositional voice. Quote
Free For All Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Sad news. But what a wealth of great music he left for us to enjoy. RIP Quote
GregK Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 I am very sorry to hear that—he was such a nice guy and an exceptional percussionist. A few years ago, he dropped by my apartment (he lived up the street) and left me a first draft of an autobiography. It needed work, but it had the elements of an absorbing story. I wonder if he did more with it. Anyone know? Any chance you would write a bio, Chris? Quote
David Ayers Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Paul Motian converted me to jazz, so I am very sorry to see he has passed. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Recall seeing him in the cellar of a pub in Nottingham in the mid-80s - can't recall who with - and being struck by how small his kit was yet how much he did with it. No giant gong and ranks of tubular bells! Quote
Clunky Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Very sad , he contributed some really amazing records to the music. From Warne Marsh to Bill McHenry , a real giant , saw him once IIRC with Lovano, Konitz & Frisell. RIP Quote
alankin Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Damn. I've been playing him a late lately. Quote
king ubu Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Shit, that's very sad. So glad to have seen him live though... Quote
mikeweil Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 Highly individual drummer - what a loss .... Quote
Stereojack Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 A fabulous musician and very original stylist. This is a great loss. Quote
Sundog Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Wow-- heart breaking news. Rarely does a day go in which I don't listen to a recording that he was involved in. Quote
