I never had the chance to see him in concert. I'll have to listen to Enrico Rava's Tati, with Motian and Stefano Bollani. It features a beautiful version of Motian's 'Birdsong'. RIP.

Drat! RIP indeed.

All I really know of his playing is the work he did with Bill Evans, but even then that would be enough for me to miss him. I especially love his playing on MOON BEAMS and HOW MY HEART SINGS, where it seems like he's doing something more sublime than just playing or accompanying.

I am very sorry to hear that—he was such a nice guy and an exceptional percussionist. A few years ago, he dropped by my apartment (he lived up the street) and left me a first draft of an autobiography. It needed work, but it had the elements of an absorbing story. I wonder if he did more with it. Anyone know?

Paul Motian converted me to jazz, so I am very sorry to see he has passed.

Recall seeing him in the cellar of a pub in Nottingham in the mid-80s - can't recall who with - and being struck by how small his kit was yet how much he did with it. No giant gong and ranks of tubular bells!

Very sad , he contributed some really amazing records to the music. From Warne Marsh to Bill McHenry , a real giant , saw him once IIRC with Lovano, Konitz & Frisell. RIP
