gregpuck Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 I know the double RVG of Live at the Village Vanguard has more songs on it, but I was wondering if anybody had an opinion about the sound quality of the TOCJ's (1500 series) that were released individually in Japan. Any opinions or help would be appreciated Thanks Greg Quote
tonym Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I don't have a copy of the TOJC but I have heard the old seperate 80's discs and I now own the RVG. The sound on the RVG is still a bit muddy but it is far better than the old seperates. On my system the drums are clearer. Are you wanting to 'upgrade'? I personaly have no desire to but I hope you find if it's worth it. cheers, tonym. Quote
couw Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I believe there were three disks in the TOCJ BN Works series comprising all of the material on the RVG 2CD set. I have vol 1 and vol 3. If I can squeeze it in and don't forget I can do some comparing. Quote
king ubu Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 There was a CD with the same cover but blue (instead of red or whatever you call that strange colour). This one (I saw it once in a store, but I'm happy with the 2CD RVG edition, cannot compare sound-wise) added the tracks not released originally, I think. Maybe this is the volume three you mention, couw? ubu Quote
tjobbe Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 (edited) I have the 2CD RVG (but none of the other releases of this session), but honestly -although I like the musik- the absolute quality of this re-master is poor compared to other sessions e.g. the K2 5CD Freelance Box set including Way out west and more.... So depends o n what your goal is... looking for an upgrade.. I personally would drop that... Cheers, Tjobbe EDIT: not sure if the base material allows great improvements in sound quality.. Claude Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I haven't heard the TOCJ release, only the original McMaster and the RVG. You can get the RVG 2CD set for the price of one TOCJ disc. With this price difference, and given that the recording itself is flawed, I would not think too much about the TOCJ option. Rudy generally did a good job in remastering the mono Blue Note sessions. couw Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 You can get the RVG 2CD set for the price of one TOCJ disc. which is why I quit my search for volume 2 and went the RVG route myself. Quote
wolff Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Don't the cymbols smear badly on every issue of this set? Except for the music, it's a terrible recording and if I had been in-charge it never would have been released. Quote
couw Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Except for the music, it's a terrible recording and if I had been in-charge it never would have been released. owww man! what a thing to say. music is more than sound and as you yourself admit, the playing is really great here. Quote

YES INDEED!! ubu Quote
wolff Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 I'm glad it's available and there are parts I like. It may be just me, but the sound is really, really bad and drives me from the room at times. The bad sound takes away from the music. A horrendous recording like this would never be released today. Quote
couw Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 (edited) okay to each his own. I enjoy the music more than the sound deficiency disturbs me. B) Edited January 16, 2004 by couw Quote
JSngry Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 A horrendous recording like this would never be released today. No doubt, and an indictment of our times if ever there was one... I'm still doing LPs on this stuff. Does the RVG have the added stage patter, and if not, where do I have to go to get it? (favorite Rollins announcement is from that Dragon thing where he says, "Good afternoon, jazz fans, this is Sonny Rollins...", like he's Red Barber doing a Dodgers game. Priceless...) Quote

Parkertown Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 This is "Uncle Don" !?!? And I love the debate of 'Lil Abner vs Kiss Me Kate. Quote
tonym Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 (edited) Wasn't it Finian's Rainbow? Edited January 16, 2004 by tonym Quote
tonym Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 He is very deadpan in his delivery of these comments too. Quote
Late Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 (edited) I have the first TOCJ and the 2-disc RVG. The TOCJ sounds very fine, but the RVG, to me, is just as good if not, at times, "better" (more presence, air, etc.). The RVG gets the vote from me due, strangely enough, to the included stage banter and the not-ridiculous price. Case closed: Buy the RVG and enter into the debate over Kiss Me Kate, no, Finnian's Rainbow, no, West Side Story, no, Star Trek. I love Theodore "Uncle Don" Rollins' playing on this whole set. shawn·m Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Another TOCJ-less comment; the RVG has less reverb and less peak distortion than the McMaster. Quote
gregpuck Posted January 17, 2004 Author Report Posted January 17, 2004 thanks for all the imput I appreciate the help. Quote
kdd Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 I don't like RVG's in general at all but I kept this one because the sound is OK and, JSngry, there is more stage patter from Sonny. The sound in general never bothered me and it is some of the best Sonny ever on record so I personally don't see where some of that other stuff is coming from. Quote
JohnJ Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 Well, I have a TOCJ and the sound is pretty good to my non-audiophile ears. The TOCJ I have is none of the those mentioned above but rather a best of version of all three volumes. Quote
