HolgerFreimutSchrick Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Michael Garrick MBE (30 May 1933 - 11 November 2011) was an English jazz pianist and composer, and a pioneer of poetry and jazz concerts. read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Garrick Quote
RogerF Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Terrible news. There's more on this at the London Jazz blogspot here: London Jazz on Michael Garrick Quote
king ubu Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Oh, holy, holy! Love his music. r.i.p. Terrible days, lately! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Gosh, didn't expect that. RIP Quote
jazzscriveyn Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 So sad to see another great one leave. Quote
Jazzjet Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 A huge loss. Good to know, however, that he was finally awarded the MBE for his services to jazz education. He was playing at one of the first jazz gigs I ever saw, at the old Phoenix in Cavendish Square, London. Quote
brownie Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 Bad news! Became aware only lately of his talents! Quote
Head Man Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 What dreadful news and so unexpected...to me at least. Michael Garrick and Gordon Beck both gone within a week...how sad. Quote
romualdo Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 I'm shocked didn't realise he was unwell (cardiac issues) was always fond of the comment Cook & Morton made in their tomes "When the big audit is completed, Britain will find itself in trouble for not having disclosed a national asset on the scale of Michael Garrick" Only just got one of his recently released (Trunk) earlier recordings with Shake Keane (Rising Stars) Quote
sidewinder Posted November 13, 2011 Report Posted November 13, 2011 (edited) I'm speechless. This is a terrible shock. Really regret now not being able to see his MJQ Tribute last year at Swanage but on the plus side I did get to hear his trio and the reunion sextet with Don Rendell, Art Themen and Norma Winstone a few years ago. Last time I saw him was at Ian Carr's tribute I think. The elders of British progressive jazz are getting decimated this year. Here's thanking Mr Garrick for his superb music though and may he rest in peace. Edited November 13, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
fent99 Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 Bit of a shock. Used to see him pretty regularly at the old Vortex in Stoke Newington where he ran a biggish band. Happy memories. Sad he is gone. RIP Quote
romualdo Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 Anyone here on the board ever see Michael's band when Joe Harriott was part of the unit - would love to hear their reminiscences Quote
RogerF Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 Obituary by Peter Vacher in today's Guardian here Quote
sidewinder Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 (edited) Obituary by Peter Vacher in today's Guardian here A bit mean in those comments about 'prolix announcements' on stage, perhaps. Better to remember that devastatingly accurate Ian Carr impersonation at the Carr tribute ! Edited November 16, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
Head Man Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 Another obit in today's Independent. No mention of "prolix" here! Michael Garrick Quote
sidewinder Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 (edited) Some more interesting thoughts and reminiscences from Tony Higgins here - blog Always thought he had a Reliant Robin and not a Hillman Imp. Good job he avoided that brick heading for Bill Evans' face ! Edited November 16, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
