medjuck Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 I've always liked the Dials probably because I heard them first. But recently was listening to some of the Verve's and Bird's solos are really good on many of them. Quote
king ubu Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 Savoy for me! That 5LP box (with great liners, too, btw!) was the first major chunk of Parker I heard (I was probably 16 oder 17 when I got it). Some of the most amazing music... and speaking of drama, you get "Ko-Ko"! Quote

JSngry Posted November 7, 2011 Report Posted November 7, 2011 The NYC Dials all have a "rehearsed" element to them that makes for less jarring WHOA!!! than the California Dials. It's probably an illusion, although the working band is there. But anyway, they're just a little more "settled in" than the Savoys, which don't even pretend to anything but show up to the spot and make it on the spot. I mean, both are the work of a true genius, but the "on the edge" fetishist in me finds the Savoys to be overall just a tad more on just a tad more of the edge than the Dials. Quote
paul secor Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 Savoys - The Dials are fine but, for me, the Savoys have a rawer, more firey quality that the Dials just miss. That said, I'm going to keep listening to both, along with the Verves and all the other Bird I have. Quote
Pete C Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 the sides with the vocal group Dave Lambert and Gil Evans put those charts together, but that doesn't make them good. Quote
JSngry Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 Oh, they're good, but just because they're good doesn't mean that I'm going to like them all that much. And these, I don't. Not these with Bird. Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 I still prefer the Varese tapes, middle 1950s. Quote
king ubu Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2009/06/edgar-varèse-and-the-jazzmen-mp3s.html fascinating stuff! Quote
Brad Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Dial, for the reasons set forth in this thread, plus thecfact that they were the first Bird I listened to and did it for hours on end. Quote
