chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez
oh balls! some sweet sweet wardell action here-- the printed discog is a MESS, so are the labels, the a b c d designations dont match up to the printed discog./tracklist info in the awwwwwwwsome sturdy gatefold jacket (*great* packinging on this one).... ....however what u DO get is a reissue of the 7008-7009 prestige stampers for the wardell memorial albms vols 1 & 2. looking in the deadwax shows which record goes where. the "real" side A is side "C" or somethin like that-- how many of you were already aware of this- this lp is basically the best you can do if youre not gonna find the original 78s
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez
* i should note althogh the 78s are the orig issue, sonically its like comparing cassette to xrcd, the lp issues are cleaner, esp for the studio tracks....however the overall sq of all these wardell sesssions has more incommon w/ parker than mobley
sidewinder
I've got both of these on UK Stateside mono LPs from the 60s and the sound is excellent. Very similar cover art. There was an earlier Esquire issue over here but I haven't heard those. Cool Wardell cartoon-like picture on them. Those Frank Morgan/Teddy Charles tracks have some weird sonics - and an out of tune piano. Great music though. Gheorghe
I have 2 CDs Vol.1 and 2 , japanese re-issue, with the whole material from 1949 - 1953 (featuring the early quartet stuff with Al Haig, who is in great form there), the sessions with Art Farmer and the later session from 1953 with Teddy Charles on it. Especially from the first session there are many alternate takes (4 or 5 takes on some tunes).
Big Beat Steve
My Prestige/Milestone twofer of that material got a lot of spins through the years and I still treasure it. I don't usually "wear out" my vinyls but this is one of the few cases where I've actually considered getting another copy of the same record as and when I come across one in significantly better condition. kh1958
I have the double LP blue label set as well, similarly out of order. Excellent music.
