J.A.W.
Just got a message from Mosaic's Scott Wenzel - he told me they're waiting for clearance from Sony for some of the circa 20 (!) new sides they discovered. I don't have titles, but some are alternates of tunes already cleared. This is exciting news. That means an extra CD to an already very promissing set. :) Scott didn't say anything about an extra CD and the website still lists 8 CDs, not 9. Maybe there was room on the 8 discs that were already planned. I might have been carried away by my enthousiasm. I looked to track listing again there is room for extra tracks especialy on discs 2,3, 4 and 7. Scott just confirmed it'll be 8 CDs, not 9. By the way, they're still awaiting clearance on the planned Lucky Thompson box. Edited January 10, 2012 by J.A.W.
king ubu
The weird Select? It's a nice gesture and I might buy it in the end, but it's really not necessary... there'd have been better groups of work in Lucky's discography to present in a Mosaic box! The news on the Hawkins is great, of course! The more I hear and read about it, the more I want it! Wasn't entirely sure in the beginning, but the more additional tracks they find, the more exciting it gets!
Bol
Very glad to hear that the Lucky Thompson set is still a possibility. Thought it was dead when it was removed from the forthcoming list -- like the Mel Powell single I was eagerly waiting for.

Do we know for certain that these tracks requiring clearance are additional to those already in the discography listed on the Mosaic site.?? There was a forthcoming CD that was listed, but then deleted. I believe it was a Columbia live session.
J.A.W.
Just got this e-mail from Mosaic: We thank you for supporting our upcoming Coleman Hawkins set, a project filled with great new transfers and a handful of amazing discoveries. And we thank you for your patience which deserves some explanation. As many of you know, the recording industry is in economic turmoil and the major labels in particular have slashed their staffs repeatedly over the past 12 years. That has caused a slowdown in almost every facet of what it is they do and that includes the legal clearance process to greenlight archival material for licensing purposes (to us in this case). Our Coleman Hawkins set, which has been ready to go for months in terms of both music and artwork, is a particularly thorny situation for clearance as it involves very old material from multiple labels. We are still awaiting clearance and our hope is that it will be cleared in the near future and we will have sets by March…But we also thought we'd have sets in time for the holiday season. Unfortunately we cannot finalize a release date as this kind of delay is completely out of our control and we can only be politely persistent in pushing the good-to-go signal. We apologize for this delay, but can assure you that this set will be well worth the wait! Regards, Mosaic Records They've now put the expected release date back to March/April. Bummer. JETman
Not yet posted on the website, but according to a conversation I had with Scott today, Mosaic is hoping for a June release. It seems that the clearance necessary for some of the material has yet to be obtained. The Ella/Webb set is scheduled for June, but, in Scott's words, will be pushed back if the Hawkins arrives in June.

Well, if it takes this long to get clearance there's nothing they can do, can they. Blame the owners of the recordings, not Mosaic. Edited March 7, 2012 by J.A.W. Thanks for the info regarding the release. I'm not mad at anybody, you (Jetman, J.A.W.) or Scott, etc. I'm just a little frustrated, and in the back of my mind---perhaps illogically, wondering if this set will ever come out. I have mine pre-ordered, and am TRYING to be patient, but the constant delays have be disheartening. I was Mosaic to be ok, and the recording industry to be ok...perhaps a pipe dream nowadays. Sorry, you came off as shooting the messenger. The fact is that the recording industry HAS changed, and Mosaic is NOT as ok as it used to be. They keep on forging on though, and I think feel a real sense of duty to their customers. Don't give up hope yet! Me? I keep wishing for the CD to finally die so I can truly enjoy my collection which is literally thousands deep.
