brownie Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 Both have been mentioned but I'll add in that they are among Getz very best albums: 'The Peacocks' Stan Getz Presents Jimmie Rowles. This is a mesmerizing record. Beautiful Getz-Rowles duos (a made-in-heaven collaboration) plus Buster Williams on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! 'Dynasty', Getz at his most inspired with a great European quartet with Rene Thomas on guitar, Eddy Louiss on organ and Bernard Lubat on drums. Recorded live and all in top form! Quote
JSngry Posted January 15, 2004 Report Posted January 15, 2004 Now, if you want to hear some deeply moving Getz (and "deeply moving" is a quality I think he didn't consistently bring to his playing until his last years; just my opinion), try this one: If "When I'm Called Home" don't get to you, you probably can't be gotten to. EKE BBB Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 One of my favorite Abbey Lincoln albums. Abbey, Stan, Hank Jones (p), Charlie Haden ( b ), Mark Johnson (d)... and Maxine Roach on viola on two tracks Quote
Peter Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 My favorite Getz bosa nova is the 1st one, with Charlie Byrd. Quote
dug Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 "DIZ and GETZ" on Verve is excellent! Quote
jazzbo Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 This thread made me pull out the Bossa Nova box set again. . . I really enjoyed the material with Almeida and the live and "faked live" dates! Quote
chris olivarez Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 What Bossa box set is that Jazzbo? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 18, 2004 Report Posted January 18, 2004 (edited) I'm sorry I guess I wasn't clear: the four cd collection of all the Bossa Nova sessions that Getz led or co-led. "The Bossa Nova Years." Edited January 18, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
mr jazz Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I can't believe no one has mentioned Anniversary . One of his finest recordings period. Serenity was recorded at the same show and is superb as well. Quote
king ubu Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Lon, doesn't that box omit one or two stray cuts? The albums should be "Jazz Samba", "Jazz Samba Encore", "Getz/Gilberto", "Getz/Gilberto #2" (which has more tracks, I think, then are in the box, no?), "Getz Au Go-Go" and "Getz/Almeida". btw, Lon, can you give the complete personnel listings for the Getz/Almeida date? I got the single CD issue (late eighties), and it does list no piano player, for instance. thanks, ubu Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I haven't compared the single releases to the box, there may be a few omissions, or rather a few discovered after the box was released, possibly. I am quite far from my collection at the moment and unable to look into the personnel listeing but I believe the piano was by Steve Kuhn. . . . Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Also I think Getz A Go Go had a nonbossa side, which is not included in the box. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 All Music lists the personnel and seems to jibe with what I remember listed in the box set: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A7m8n1va8zzma Also, I think the Getz/Gilberto #2 may contain Gilberto tunes that do not include Getz. . . and would not be in the box set. Quote
king ubu Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Thanks, Lon! I was wondering, because the box was around somewhere here, and I only got CDRs (from the old CDs) of Jazz Samba and Jazz Samba Encore, and don't have Au Go Go at all - so the box might be the way to go. Remastering should be fairly good, too, I guess. ubu Quote

And thanks again! You're right about Getz/Gilberto #2 most probably. There are several tracks without Getz, there. Steve Kuhn! Cool. Don't ask me why I did not have the idea to check AMG myself -_- ubu Quote
mikeweil Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 - so the box might be the way to go. Remastering should be fairly good, too, I guess. I have the box set and nothing to complain about the sound! Quote
tonym Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I have only just gotten holdof the box set and I noticed that Ebony Samba appears in two versions where on the album 'Jazz Samba Encore!' it only appears once (I think). With regard to the track 'A Tribute to Stan', I have no idea where this originally appeared (if at all). The liner notes do not list personnel for that either. The sound is, to my ears, the same as the VME's. A little hissy maybe but generally excellent. I'm sure it must have been done around the same time. cheers, tonym. Quote
king ubu Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Thanks, gotta look if it's still there. ubu Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 The Tribute to Stan apparently (if I remember the notes properly) is the only surviving track of a "lost session" that is not properly documented. A nice track indeed. . . wish there were more! I think the sound is fine on the box set. A bit darker, thicker than the Verve Master Edition copies when I've done a comparison to the two that I have. But in some systems that is in fact a PLUS. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 I've actually got a copy of the Getz Mosaic box (3 CDs) in my "sell" pile. I was thinking about offering it here on Organissimo for $100 (including shipping to the US and Canada, extra for other countries). Later, Kevin Quote
BFrank Posted May 14, 2005 Report Posted May 14, 2005 Stan Getz - "My Foolish Heart: Live at the Left Bank" w/Richie Beirach (piano), Dave Holland (bass), and Jack DeJohnette (drums) Just picked this up from eMusic and it's smokin'. Very much in the style of the "Captain Marvel" album and this band ain't half bad, either. Quote
Sundog Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Up for those in search of Getz recs. Quote
kh1958 Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 I'd like to amend my list of favorites to include his posthumous release, Ballads and Bossas: The Lost Sessions. This has become my favorite of his last years. There's also a nice Getz DVD out, The Last Recording. Quote
